On tap at some random pub outside Milwaukee.
Surly watches out for Surly.
Surly has a way of playing with stylistic guidelines to produce neat, adventurous beers that aren't quite what they're billed as even though they definitely are what they are billed as. If I had to describe this beer I'd call it a Scotch Stout.
The nitro pour gives the dark red beer a deep haze. The aroma is a bit muted due to the nitro, but as it warms there are firm nodes of biscuits and herbs against charred barley.
The flavor is quite lively, with nuts and biscuits up front, toffee in the middle, stout grain on the back end and then tea in the finish. Not quite like anything I've ever had before, yet also quite accessible.

Surly Simpson's Scottish Ale Nitro, 5.4% ABV. Pours deep brown with a right pretty two finger off-white nitro head. Nose is malty and sweet, taste follows plus peaty, with no bitterness. Excellent smooth nitro mouthfeel, overall excellent. Would love to have a BA version.

Very tasty, no peat, on the sweet side (caramel).
