Clear, pale crimson color, swiftly diminishing beige head.
In the nose: Sweet caramel malt notes start if off, with a side order of toffee. Stone fruit and berries merge with the mix. The briefest whiff off hops.
In the mouth: Flavors from the aroma appear on the palate. Richness and sweetness abound , with hardly a trace of bitterness. High alcohol content makes an early appearance. It's not too out of place, but I'd expect a fuller body to accompany it. As it is, it's a bit too much on the medium side. And fairly smooth and easy drinking.
This one's not really doing it for me. It's an alright beer, and I can drink it, but I'm not going out of my way for one.

From a 12oz can:
Appearance: Clear amber, good head.
Smell: Toffee, caramel, hint of floral.
Taste: Moderate sweetness, toffee, mild earthiness, balanced, and smooth.
Overall: Loved this beer, maybe it's just been too long since I had a good dopplebock, but this really hit the spot. Nice sweetness and earthiness, not boozy. Great beer!

Rich and mellow, strong malt in the nose. If you dig a little, you note an alcohol base.

Appearance: Pours a clear, bright ruby & amber color with a massive off-white head. SRM of 15-16. Beautiful. Should have expected this from Surly (4.25)
Aroma: Moderate aromas of dark molasses, toffee, caramel. Some sweet dark fruit and bread. Some German yeast adds complexity... As the beer warms it identifies itself as the classic Surly yeast strain found in other Surly beers. This always reminds me of honeyflower, but its sweeter here. The one I've come to love. (4.50)
Flavor: Dark, rich, toffee, syrup, and baked waffles coated in syrup. Malty and not roasty nor spiced. No French Toast nor brown sugar spice here. Just baked sweet bread, syrup, and pastry. It has white flour and sugar amidst the honeyflower. No bitterness. Again, some German yeast provides some flavor complexity. The German yeast flavor provides some nice lemon and yeast, and actually reminds me of Surly's other beers....Again, probably the same yeast strain. More malty though. Absolutely delicious and near perfect flavor here. (4.75)
Feel: Moderate to heavy bodied. Light enough though. Decent carbonation. Still, finishes heavy, sweet, and hides the alcohol well. (4.00)
Compared to Bad Weather Brewins Ominous Ale 12/30/20: Pours a lighter color. Aromas are more pale. More syrup and white pastry. Less cocoa, roast, dark fruit, molasses. Similar sweetness or even sweeter.
Compared to Founders' Dirty Bastard Ale 4/24/21: Pours a lighter, more amber color. Stronger aromas. More syrup, molasses, scotch/whiskey, and flowery aromas. More caramel, syrup, molasses, sugar, flower, and malty flavors. Less chocolate and roast. Smoother and maltier.
Overall: Big, syrupy, and sweet. Not dark like you would expect though. Above the toffee, it has a white sugar/flour sweetness possibly from the traditional surly yeast strains. Absolutely delicious and a fantastic German yeast strain to provide authentic and complex Doppelbock flavors. Haven't compared it to others within the style, but from my first impression, this is a quality Doppelbock. The Surly yeast strain has fantastic flavors. Take Surly's strain and make it malty and sweet. Absolute delicious. I don't even like malty beers, but GD I wish I could find this one again. One of the best malty beers, and don't pass this one up folks! (Final Rating: 4.59)

This is the beer I've been waiting for my whole life. Love the maltiness of this beer. The perfect amount of sweetness with caramel and hints of fruit. Despite its richness it goes down quick. I look forward to the day that they sell it individually. I suspect given the quality of this beer they will do it soon. Best beer Surly offers in my opinion.

I am shocked how much I liked this red lager from Surly. Not being an IPA I was surprised that it was not a sweet, cloying mess. Really nice malt flavor of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit with an earthy balance of hops. It has a lot of alcohol but I do not sense any of it in the aroma or flavor. Wonderfully carbonated.

This is my kind of beer. Rich caramel bread sweetness........some black cherries and plums mingle in...fuller side of medium bodied....rich....leans oversweet/cloying but never makes it there....
Definitely not a bock or doppelbock...not sure what it is but it is enjoyable.

Pours a clear bright copper color with a beige head. Smell is toffee, dark fruit caramel. Taste follows nose fruit and toffee work well with caramel, fig and baked bread malts. Mouth feel is smooth and not overly sweet with nice notes fruits, bread and malt. Very good a pleasure to drink.

12oz can, from the "Thaw Pack" (variety pack with 'Fall To Pieces', 'Furious', and 'Xtra-Citra'). Bottom of can is stamped 'CANNED ON 12/17/19'.
Clear, deep amber colored body. One finger of dirty white head. Leaves behind a few strings of lacing.
Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, and a little dark fruit and chocolate.
Taste is sweet candy caramel malts, along with cherry and other dark fruit. A little bit of chocolate emerges from the confluence of the other flavors.
A little thicker than medium body, with some stickiness. Very good carbonation.
This needs to have its own packs and not hidden away in a variety pack. The initial sweetness is not cloying and leads to an expanding set of bready and dark fruit flavors.

Brewery notes: Brewed for Thousandaires The World Over.
Hops Warrior, Malt: Munich, Pilsner, Caramunich. Yeast: German Lager
My Notes:
Look: transparent deep (dark) amber body. A nice fine tall off white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing.
Smell: bread/toast sweet malt
Taste: Sweet, plenty of caramel and toffee. Then you get some dark fruit (plum? mild fig/date? ). on the finish you get some toasted bread, a micro hint of roast maybe. Fairly sweet, and somewhat smooth. a hint of alcohol at times.
Feel: slightly syrupy malt.
A good beer, 4.15/5. The negative is you have to buy the "Thaw " variety 12 pack to get it or go to Surly tap room. The 3 others beers in the 12pack are Ipa's/APA's. Odd marketing. I wish I could get this by itself in a 4/6 pack or in a 12 pack of non clashing beers.
So what style of beer is this? I think it's a American style dopplebock
