Murky rusty orange with a white cap that settles into thick white collar. Blackberry, barnyard funk, sweet white wine barrel with bright yet faint oak, hints of white grape and black currant make up the nose. Taste is almost exactly the same, though barnyard funk is diminished to a kiss, replaced with wild yeast and a hint of herbal earth. Feel is lighter and vinous, with puckering tartness and complimentary acidity, funk is felt consistently but culminates in the finish. Great grisette on a scorching hot day. #SplitUpSaison

my first beer from the baghaven spot, been frothing over these since day one. i constantly look at them online, dream of trying them, and was stoked they had a couple bottles from this location at the san francisco spot when i was there last week. this is a grisette base done in chardonnay barrels with blackberries, low alcohol, pretty high acid, clean and pink colored, not as lively in terms of carbonation as anticipated, but a nice presentation and a cool beer, if a little less distinct on the ferment than i was hoping and expecting it to be. batch 1. a stained glass luster to this, high clarity through most of the bottle, and an aroma of sweet jammy natural berries and a bacterial tang that resonates just one step more intense than the natural acidity of the fruit. mouthwatering but less funk, less lambic character than i thought it might have, tannic like wine, its taken on a lot from the oak treatment and even the chardonnay the barrels contained. the flavor is not as berry forward as the nose, for me the sour notes lead, light vinegar in the mix even, and because of the sharpness i am glad to be sharing the bottle. lemony notes, a ton from the wine, a floral almost rose note behind the berries, and less from the malt than this seems to want. i know the style to be fluffy and earthier than this, and it seems a tad thin overall, especially in the absence of more carbonation. dont get me wrong, i really liked this, and its excellent overall, but i had such high hopes for my first baghaven beer that maybe this had no chance of living up, maybe would score it higher from another brewery, but in my mind this place is held to the highest of standards, fair or not. i wanted a little more from the base grisette itself, and from the ferment, not super wild to me here, but it was a treat to drink this with friends and my enthusiasm for sourcing these beers remains at an all time high!
