Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: American IPA
Glass: Pure Project 14-oz. snifter elemental (air) glass
Price: $14.99 for a 6-pack
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Sept. 15, 2022
Consumed: Sept. 15, 2022
Misc.: Canned on Aug. 16, 2022 at 9:47 a.m. PT
Went to Windmill Farms to pick up Aurora Hoppyalis to take to a work trip to Salt Lake City but somehow they were all out. So I went with this Pizza Port beer instead. Pizza Port’s website called this beer “Extended Getaway IPA showcases some of our favorite New Zealand hop varietals, Motueka and Nelson. Expect aromas and flavors to range from gooseberry, lime, tropical lychee and black currant to honeysuckle, fresh-cut grass, white pepper and pine. The beer finishes with a subtle bitterness, a hallmark of West Coast style IPAs. A simple grain bill leads to a clear, light straw color and medium body. With one sip you will want to extend your stay.”
Poured a pale yellow clear color with 5-to-6 fingers of white frothy head. Could see plenty of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass at different speeds. World-class uneven foamy lacing. Almost-perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled more Motueka than Nelson but both there. Also pine, grass, mint, lime, grapefruit, mango, black pepper, peach and melon. Smelled about as good from the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted about as good as the nose. In order got Motueka, black pepper, pine, resin, grass, lime, mint, Nelson, white grape, peach, grapefruit, mango and melon. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
This was pretty damn good and I underrated it slightly. (Overall - 4.00)

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass
A: Pours golden yellow with a frothy cream white head that settles to a light layer and leaves a little nice lacing.
S: Green herbal resinous notes, citrus, floral, soft underlying exotic, tropical, and stone fruit, and bready malt.
T: Resinous, green spicy herbal notes, slowly gives way to a mix of citrus, exotic, tropical, and stone fruit, lemon, grapefruit, gooseberry, passion fruit, apricot, peach, lime, mango, and white grape, floral notes, and bready biscuity malt, with a fairly dry finish.
M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.
O: I feel like the Crystal hops actually came through more than the Nelson. Solid overall as a Westy, but I'm not in love with it.

16 oz. can poured into a pint glass. The Extended Getaway pours a lemony golden with notable haze and a thin cap of whitish foam. Seems to have a bit of greenish tint perhaps from a healthy wheat component.
Nose is fluff with tropical fruits, lemon and a bit of resinous pine as well. More volatile than anything of late and notable from the crack of the can. Taste offers more citrus notes, a soft bready feel and a lingering yet not too bitter finish. Bit of sweetness on the finish allows for more drinkability than say a Swami's. Overall an easy drinking IPA.
Note: Canned 8/31/22

I drank this pint can while watching football and it was a pleaser. Good aroma and taste from the tag team hop bill of Motueka and Nelson. A tropical fruit (papaya and lime) winning combination. Good mouthfeel and carbonation made this one an easy drinker.

Canned 8/25/22 consumed from a tall tulip on 9/12. brilliant white 3 finger head with dood retention. Nearly perfectly clear, almost lemony yellow color. Not a lot of smell and fairly muted taste that is really nice but nothing that whacks you in the tastebuds and screams “ flavor xyz”. moderate body with very smooth finish.

Packaged on 8/9 - consumed on 9/8/2022 - poured from a pint can into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.
Clear amber body with an overflowing fist of enormous rocky papaya whip foam. Immense crenelated, rocky, sticky lacing. Superior retention.
Hop-forward nose suffused with passion-fruit, lime zest, pink peppercorn, and grass. Bright, faintly tropical, and clean.
Medium-dry, faintly spicy, moderately bitter palate entry with hints of tropical fruit. Taste follows the nose. Crackery dry finish with a lasting smooth bitterness. Wonderful showcase of hops.
Faintly sticky, medium-light bodied, crisp, riding the line between satiating and refreshing.
Excellent, balanced, hop-forward WC IPA from Port - also a great value.

This is really good. And what speaks to me most is it’s subtlety. So many beers are “podcast beers” - all loud and over the top. But here, in Extended Getaway, it’s not some pimple faced wiener recording his session in his parents basement, it’s Vin Scully - really smooth and cool. Yeah, it’s kind of a super model in a hoodie - sneaky and sexy.
Oh baby.

Canned 08/09/22, so almost as fresh as it gets outside of the brewpubs. One of their “seasonal” WCIPAs, which is really just a base recipe with different hops. This one is released August thru November. But these different hops happen to be of the NZ variety, so this beer is obviously incredible. Motueka, Nelson, Crystal. Delicious!
