A- Poured into a tulip at CBC. Pours a dark brown almost black. with a nice 1/4" head.

S- Definite saison from the nose. Some farmhouse 'funk' with a dark malty character.

T- Some of that Saison character for sure. Usually saisons are lighter bodied but this we a bit fuller than that from the roasty grains. Not too much hop character but enough that you knew it was there. Some sharper flavors pushed through like pepper and ginger.

M- Good carbonation and a nice medium thickness on the tongue.

D- I really liked this beer. I need to get back and have some more before it goes away.

On draught at the brewpub, served in a tulip, Saison Noire, is, as the name suggests, a dark ambered brown, with a small eggshell head. The lack of head is lame, even for a draught, but I give it a bump above average for the unusual color. Had the beer not worked, that probably would have been a bump down!

Smell has nice, fruity saison esters with the unusual (for the style) compliment of chocolate, as well as spicy, peppery hops.

Taste is really great, I was immediately sold on the dark saison concept from the first sip, which revealed a nice minty hoppiness, caramel and chocolate, as well as a hefty does of my beloved saison esters (this being the more fruity, blaugies type rather then the pepperiness of dupont). Yummy!!!

Mouthfeel is dry and crisp, with a light body.

Drinkability is very good, this is the best dark saison I've ever had, the malts chosen provided an excellent addition to the well made base saison without overwhelming it. By far my favorite beer of the many tasting offerings at CBC, as well best of trip after my week in Boston - although fresh Allagash Wit on tap was a close second!
