On tap at the grey lodge, brewed for beer week by about 12 or so philly beer publicans, celebs, and the like. Part of beer camp. Thanks Scoats for making the trek to Chico.

Exporter comes looking baltic like with a deep bold black with a lighter tan head about an inch and a thick base around the glass. No stick. Smells like an average porter, not baltic really. Smells include roasted malt, chocolate syrup and some piney hops hidden under all that richness. Tastes include oast malt up front followed by a bit of chocolate cake followed by vanilla splash and finishing slightly hopped, very miniscule but it's there. Also some nutty appeal in the middle. Mouth screams regular porter and nothing above that. A bit thin but this is a step below medium and a bit watery. Not coating on the mouth. Goes down easy. Despite the lacking body and normal tastes for the style this went down easy. A bit one sided..

Edit- Found out that this is only 5.8% and is supposed to be a sessionable baltic porter so I guess that's why it feels thin.

On tap @ Teresa's Next Door (Wayne, PA) on 9/4/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black, with a finger of foamy mocha head. There is a rich looking retention to this that leaves some thick foamy lacing behind. The aroma smells of chocolate roast, a dash of coffee, and some sweeter caramel notes. Hops have there place in this as well, giving the nose a tinge of herbal and green earthy character. Nice smokiness to this as well, being fairly strong but not overly biting in any way.

The taste is a fairly even mix of chocolate, caramel, roast, and toffee, with a nice green bitterness that gives this some earthy zip. The finish is probably the most memorable part of this; with a dense toasted and smoky feel to it that hangs in the mouth with a dry roasted feel. The mouthfeel is medium boded, maybe even a little fuller feeling, with a crisp sharpness in the mouth that sits on top of some smoother slickness underneath. Alcohol content feels low, helping give this a pretty decent drinkibility.

I could see where they were maybe going with the low ABV Baltic Porter thing here, even is this lacked some of the flavor that I usually associated with that style, but I did thoroughly enjoy my glass of this when taken as a hoppy American Porter. Tasty, easy drinking and even almost a little refreshing, I dug this Beer Camp offering. I'm definitely interested in seeing how the barrels at RR take to this.

13 oz pour at Teresa's Next Door.

Pours a rich, dark chocolate black with a dense, long lasting khaki colored head that leaves thick sheets of lacing. Aroma is sweet and toasty, with a mild smoked malt undertone. Flavor is more smokey and sweet than the nose which had more of a toasted presence. Body is very thick and smooth, exceptionally soft and full on the palate. Overall a very mice sessionable blend of a Baltic porter and hoppy American porter like Edmund.

Made at the 25th Beer Camp by a conglomeration of the Philly beer scene elite. Vinne was given half of the batch to age in Dumol pinot noir barrels. I hope to get some at the next PBW. $5 for 13 oz.

A: Served with a finger and a half of medium light brown head, frothy/creamy and excellent retention. Big bubbles linger on top. Excellent lacing in cracquelated sheets. Thin film. Dark brown body with opacity only when held to light, at which point it becomes ruby brown and much clearer than expected.

S: The nose is roasty and full of fudge and dark chocolate. Leather, soil, earthy and lightly musty. Soaked wood.

T: Following the nose and adding a slight fruitiness. A little alcohol flavor is fine, but for a 5.8% Baltic Porter, it is grossly out of scale.

M: Less than adequate body for a porter, a bit thin with a slick alcoholic texture. Low bitterness.

D: The flavor and mouthfeel were severe misses and the drinkability suffers as a result. Appearance and aromas, however, were good to very good but those characteristics have little to do with drinkability as far as I'm concerned.

This brew seems like it will welcome the barrel aging with open arms. It's a decent base beer and it should be very impressionable. If anyone knows what to do with it, it's Mr. Cilurzo.

Had on tap at Teresa's. Pours a dark-brown, near black color, with a decent sized head and solid lacing. Head eventually settles down to a thin foam while the lacing sticks to the walls throughout. Smells and tastes like roasted malts and smoky chocolate though neither is overwhelming. Slightly more complex than most porters I've had. Being summer this is not as drinkable as I would probably feel about it in December, but I can't fault the brewer for this as this was made for Philly beer week. All around, very drinkable and hopefully I'll get to taste some of the brew that Teresa's says is being aged by Vinny in pinot noir barrels for the next year.

On-tap at Teresa's Next Door during Philly Beer Week.

Appearance: Dark brownish with minimal head.

Smell: Roasted coffee, burnt chocolate malt with subtle hop aroma.

Taste: Roasted malt, chocolate and toffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and quite smooth.

Drinkability: Wish this was more available instead of a one-off. I like what Sierra Nevada is doing with these beer camps.
