Rugged and resilient, rye has been a staple grain for ages and its spicy black pepper-like flavor has been prized by distillers and brewers for centuries. Rye thrives in the harshest conditions and comes to life in Ruthless, a rugged IPA with fruity, citrus and herbal hop notes countered by the dry spiciness of the rye. Holding a steadfast balance between contrasting malt and hop character, Ruthless is bold enough to inspire even the most brazen hop head to bear down and embrace the flavor.

Hazy amber color, medium off-white head. Aroma of pine, bread, and malt. Bready, grainy taste with notes of pine and hoppy bitterness. Strong bitterness in long aftertaste.

Canned in a stubbie little crafty craft can and brought around as part of a box of beers brought round by Jim, the Independent Salford beer festival organiser.
Pours a clear mid brown body with rather splendid white head
Aroma is rubbing alcohol and sesame oil
Flavour is smooth rye, like fancy whiskey, dry and boozy too

Clear copper pour, modest but fluffy white head. Nose is malted rye, barley and pine cones. Medium+ bitterness. Through the middle there is beautiful hop bitterness and peppery rye oiliness. Alcohol puts in an appearance at the end, but hop bitterness is in control through every stage of this brew. Another standout from a brewery I trust and admire.|1/8/2013

This beer pours a large head that goes away quickly and a nice golden orange color. Aroma is citrus and spice. Taste is spicey and slightly sweet with a slight bitterness at the finish. I've always enjoyed the Rye beers because of their spiciness. 58 IBUs Rated 4-9-2023

Solid! Poured from a 12oz can (Costco Mixpack) into a Pint glass.
Color is light orange (not too impressive), however the 1/2" head is nice and very active lacing. The nose is not special, it smells like beer.
>> The taste is hops, and they are unique, as it is very bitter up front, and the bitterness sticks around a while on the pallet. There are some other strong ingredients here too that I can't really identify. There might be tropical (Citra) hops being used here, but the hops profile is more complex than that; so other hops are here too. The hops have a dry finish flavor almost like their Pale Ale actually. There is a lot of malty flavor here too.
I have not tried a Rye IPA in years because of one or two bad beers a decade or two ago, but I feel bad that I missed this one. For the style, this is now my favorite Rye beer. I would buy this if I found a six-pack, for sure.
I am rating this higher, because I really like the taste a lot.

9/29/24 - (Can - Brother’s Home) (Las Vegas, NV) Can Notes: Obtained via 9/28/24 gift from brother David, @DALVTOUR on Beer Advocate. Refrigerated upon his purchase at Costco. 12 oz canned 7/23/24 at 16:53 AM. 6.6% ABV Rye IPA. Contains Malted Barley. Brewed and canned by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, California and Nills River, North Carolina, USA.
Rye has been a staple grain for millennia- sought after for it’s stubborn resilience in the field and revered for its unique flavor. Ruthless Rye IPA combines the peppery spice of rye and bright. Citrusy hops for complex flavors at once rustic and refined.
Appearance: Poured about 8 oz into a shaker pint glass. Generous puffy light tan white head leaves spotty lacing and an airy cover over the clear brown tan base with mild carbonation dripping off quickly to nothing. 4.0
Aroma: Nice blend of rye seeds, caramel and toffee. Smells very sweet, strong. 4.0
Taste: More muted and better suited to a rye IPA, with the rye and a solid bitterness running neck and neck in a photo finish. Not a wide range of flavors, but digging the rye, one of my favorite flavors. 4.25
Mouthfeel: Carbonation not felt or seen, creamy medium body not enhanced. Feels a little stronger than the ABV, rye, nice bitterness, slightly dry, rye very nice on the finish. 4.0
Overall: This is a nice IPA, narrow focus but very enjoyable. Thanks for another nice gift David! 4.25

L: Pours a dark red amber color with a large white head and thick lacing around the glass, very nice looking beer.
S: The spicy rye is apparent, a little bit of light sweet malt and a strong piney to slightly dank bitterness.
T: Some spicy rye mixes with a strong bitterness that coats the to ngue and is rather piney with a little hint of darkness. Definitely a more old school IPA.
F: Medium body, smooth carbonation.
O: I like the rye in this beer and this is a solid IPA.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. "Ruthless Rye IPA"
12 fl. oz. can coded "53 PKGD 062824 11:01"
Notes via stream of consciousness: A clear copper colored body is topped by a massive head of off-white foam. There's a bit of a crimson sheen to it, and golden and orange highlights can be seen flickering inside when held to the light. You can smell the rye in it, it's unusual and a little spicy. It's also floral and lightly citrusy. Interesting. On to the taste... well no surprise here, it tastes like it smells. The rye is quite clear, and the floral and citrusy character also comes through. It's also piney, earthy, woody, and herbal. That works really well with the spicy rye and medium to medium-dark caramel maltiness, and the touch of citrus livens it with grapefruit, lemon, and orange. I also get a subtle hint of chocolate in the background. The malt is lightly sweet upfront but it's solidly bitter and it finishes dry with some earthiness, pine, and herbal character lingering. It reminds me of piles of dried leaves along the streets on a damp fall night. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. Sometimes rye beers can be out of balance, or just not that well rounded, but this is nicely done all around, and beautifully polished. Sierra Nevada certainly knows how to make focused and refined beers.

Poured from bottle. Dark amber, medium white head. Not overly strong or complex on nose but made up for in taste. Peppery and grainy with a honey sweetness to wash it down. Crisp and light enough feel to balance it all out. Good stuff.

Pours a dark amber. Very slight smell of bread and hops. Tastes of citrus peel or rinds and the peppery rye flavor, ending with a profound hop bitterness. This flavor although odd at first really grew on me, very delicious. The feel is smooth with medium carbonation. Overall another great beer from Sierra Nevada.

Pours a deep amber. Thin foam. Hop aroma. Spicy rye body with a light malt character and a bitter hop finish. Everything comes together well. A solid rye IPA.

smell is little bit absent but otherwise a fantastic beer. the look and feel are just right. look is translucent copper-brown and the feel is thick and crisp at the same time. taste is a little metallic but i quite like it and think it resembles an english style winter warmer.

A very good brew, but not if you don’t like spice.
Look: Red with a touch of orange. Large head.
Smell: Fresh baked bread with a hint of hops.
Taste: As it does with the smell, the rye really comes through with the taste. The spices from the rye are very prominent and make for a really savory flavor.
Feel: High carbonation, has a surprisingly light finish.
Overall: This is a very bready, spice filled beer that will warm your ass up on a cold December day. I personally am quite fond of this beer, but many may find it over-powering.
