Imagine you set sail for a three hour tour. Let's say from the port of Escondido (work with us here). The weather started getting rough. You're tiny ship (but not lunch, thankfully) was tossed. Long story short: You're marooned on a remote island somewhere near the Tropic of Thunder. The good news is that the Capt. Of the S.S. Stone and her brewing kit were among the small cast of colorful characters that survived the rough voyage with you. Mainstays Citra and Mosaic, along with newcomer Cashmere hops are joined by their juicy tropical aromas of citrus, pineapple and coconut (try stringing all that together in a catchy tune). The rescue ship will find you all soon enough. For now, set aside the non-working cell phone and lack of social media (again, work with us here), kick back and revel in your moment of tropical island lagoon serenity.

Copenhagen 4/9 2020. 35,5 cl can from Meny, Østerfælled Torv. Yellow can with Stone's characteristic devil-head and a tropical landscape in the background.

Pours slightly unclear yellow with a medium-sized white head. Settles as thin, almost transparent layer of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet malty odor supplemented by strong citric notes. Sweet pale malts, cardboard. Grape fruit and lemon. A bit perfumed.

Medium strong carbonation. Thin, watery, tingling and lively texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly stronger citric bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingers for a while. Finish is dry.

Fine lager which balances the sweet macro lager sweetness with a decent citric, dry bitterness.

Don't remember too much about this beer other than for a Stone beer it wasn't that great. I really like most of Stone's beer. Nice hoppy aroma and a nice bitter taste, but nothing special. Rated 10-21-2023 45 IBUs

LOOK: Pours a moderately hazy pale gold with a nice 2 finger pure white head that demonstrates good retention and has even better side glass lace.
AROMA; Plenty of citrus hops hit the nose, not normal for the Lager brand. Orange or tangerine rind as well as some tropical ones included with some bready herbal malts.
TASTE: Some earthy malts and hops up front and citrus hops. Some light bitterness
This should be characterized as an TPL.
Good beer, just not what I expected.

568 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 19 2020 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy, translucent medium golden colour, generating more than a finger of soapy, sparkling white head that lasts for the better part of five minutes. Gobs of gorgeous, messy lacing are left behind as it fizzles down to a fat, frothy collar and thin cap - looks fantastic to me. Pink grapefruit, lemon and tangerine on the nose, with hints of passion fruit, melon, pineapple and floral hops, as well as a touch of bready malts.

A pleasantly fruity, fairly strong lager that can reasonably be lumped together with IPLs. It starts off a little sweet, with bready malts, honey and canned pineapple in syrup, followed up by notes of cantaloupe, grapefruit and mandarin orange. Notes of lemony citrus pith and floral, slightly earthy bitterness come through towards the finish, preceding a tropical fruit-y aftertaste that lingers on the palate briefly. Light-medium in body, with moderately lively carbonation that provides a little bit of crispness to this brew's smooth, satisfying texture. Good drinkability, even at nearly 6%.

Final Grade: 3.97, a very solid B+. As more than a few BAs have already noted, Stone's Tropic of Thunder is something of a wolf (IPA) in sheep's (lager's) clothing. Of course, if you're surprised by the fact that a Stone product was unnecessarily and unrepentantly hoppy, then hopefully you didn't hurt anything while tumbling off the back of that turnip truck. It's a little pricy at $4 (Canadian) per 'very tall' boy, but I'd still recommend this to hopheads who are seeking out something more refreshing and less palate-exhausting than their usual fare.

So very citrusy and dank at the same time. It’s very easy to drink (crushable) and strong at the same time. This is a really great lager for the summer, fall, winter and spring!

Ya, the look and smell are nothing special at all. Taste and mouthfeel are pretty nice, though. Does have a tropical flavor of green mango, pineapple, and lemon. Mouthfeel is very good, imho. That is a personal thing but for me it's nice--medium and a bit syrupy for the low alcohol level.

This tastes exactly like an IPA. Its really just fine as an IPA, but I wanted a larger. I am disappointed. I won't buy this brand again. I will drink the 6 pack, and I'll probably enjoy it; once I just accept the beer for what it is--an IPA!
