Bourbon barrel-aged for an immensely smooth character, yet a complex and substantial flavor. Made with our Baltic brewing friend Wojtek, a master of the style from Brewery Widawa in Poland. Pirating this awesome recipe from Baltic history, we created this crazy collaboration by getting all the traditional malts, lager yeast, and even hops fresh from his source in Poland! Then for distinct hop character. we increased the kettle aroma hops by 3x.

Looks dark brown almost black in color. Oily. Smell is strongly of bourbon, with hints of molasses, vanilla, caramel, burnt toffee. Taste follows the nose perhaps with some dark chocolate in there too. Heavy on the bourbon flavor. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation. Overall this is pretty delicious but I could really only drink one. It’s very rich and sweet. Almost syrupy without the thickness. I like the backstory of this beer. Hoppin Frog Brewery is always willing to try something new!

Pours dark brown with a thin, tan head.
Smell of sweet malt, dark fruit, brown sugar and caramel. A slight smoked meat.
Tasteof smoked meat and sweet malt up front. Candied dark fruit, black licorice, bakers chocolate.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and no lacing.
This smells like charred malt, heavy oak, roasted malt, and dark chocolate.
This is a little bit intense, and too bitter. It's heavily charred, a bit smoky, and with a boozy bitter dark chocolate thing going. There's also boozy bourbon, and bitter coffee- do you get the idea? This is just too much. Hoppin' Frog usually has a more deft hand.
This is somewhat syrupy, but also kind of thin, with not that much drinkability.
I expected a lot more out of this one. I usually love Hoppin' Frog BA beers.

12oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled of bourbon, oak, vanilla and dark chocolate. Really boozy tasting with a strong bourbon taste. Mild roastiness and dark chocolate flavor.

12 ounce bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, marshmallow, molasses, licorice, raisin, plums, prune, fig, cherry, berry, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop/plum notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, marshmallow, molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, cherry, berry, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, nuts, dark/brown bread, coconut, marshmallow, molasses, licorice, dark fruits, light smoke/char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop/plum flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; and no acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness, and bourbon/oak spiciness. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeast notes present. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and fairly sticky/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.5%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Baltic porter! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate earthy hop/plum flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV; with the mellowly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Not overly roasty/charred on malts. Liked this a bit more than the base beer as expected. Mellowed out on hop bitterness from barrel aging, and much silkier/fuller on mouthfeel. Very rich malt complexity, perfect bourbon barrel integration, and solid earthy hops/plums presence. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing spot on style example.

Hoppin' Frog Barrel Aged Baltic Pirate Porter, 9.5% ABV. Pours black, with a slight brown head that left no lacing. Nose is bourbon and cola, and taste follows, with a moderate bitter close. Under-carbonated so good mouthfeel. Overall very good to near excellent. I am shocked that a pirate named/themed beer had no rum.

Pours into a mug a deep walnut brown with a half finger creamy-like deep beige head atop.Vanilla tinged bourbon and chocolate mainly in the nose, not in your face but nice enough.A mix of alcohol sweetness and vanilla from the bourbon barrel with a sight lactic/woody note in the finish. Not getting the flavor profile I have to say,it's not terrible by any means but seems a bit off,not nearly as good as expected.

The convex tan bubbly dome slowly cascades into a matte black body.
A coconut cola aroma is paired with waxy nuts and dry wood.
The palate has a persistently numbing, stinging heat throughout, with flavors of black licorice, tobacco and tangy hints of blueberry to go along with a substantial woody coconut via a velvety smooth body with a tingly carbonation and semi-dry finish.
