look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a clear, copper body with a tall, though thinning, white head.

Smell: Pale and wheat maltiness done up right with crisped sugars and spice and maybe a bit of lavender. Infused with a few added drops of orange citrus oils. Distant note of red wine, like someone dropped a bottle in the next room.

Taste: Soft malted wheat sweetened with citrus-flavored candy and vanilla-lavender ice cream. Dash of spice. Slight pear fruitiness. A puckering red wine component jumps in and out of the flavor. Finishes creamy, warming, and rather dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Very velvety texture.

Drinkability: A nice saison, albeit a very different kind of saison.

750mL cork and caged bottle, thanks to Crawford, poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head that recedes quickly to a small collar and leaves no lacing.

The aroma is very intriguing with light sweet fruits, pears and apples especially, along with an earthy spiciness and a definite barrel presence with some oak.

The taste is just as complex and has all kinds of things going on. The underlying saison qualities are there with a sweet and spicy combo from the yeast along with lots of tartness and sugar from the light fruits. All of this is balanced with the dry vinous presence of the barrel, especially in the finish.

The mouthfeel is pretty full bodied for a saison with good carbonation, with a sweetness that builds on the palate a bit between sips, in a good way.

Another very creative offering from 5 Seasons and one of the better saisons I've had. The red wine barrels really add a complexity that you don't often see in this style. Great stuff.

750ml corked and caged bottle 2007 vintage. Shared with a buddy of mine pouring it into a standard pint glass.

A: Cloudy light brown with a thin haze of bubbles. The small head has excellent retention but does not leave any lacing.

S: Classic saison barnyard aroma dominates the nose. The aroma also reminds me a bit of red wine and oak which I assume comes from the barrel it was aged in. More interesting than the other saisons I have had.

T: It has a lot of flavor compared to other saisons. The oak flavor adds some nice complexity to the taste. I typically do not care for this style, but this one is fantastic.

M: Medium body and creamy smooth mouthfeel once again make it stand out for the style. The in mouth carbonation was excellent.

D: The smoothness of this beer makes it extremely drinkable. I wish I had another bottle to drink after this one.

I have enjoyed all the beers I have had at 5 Seasons, but this one is by far the best of the creations I have ever had. A truly fantastic beer.
