Before Matryoshka, there was a darkness – a stout that we hold dear to our hearts – from Fort George to you, from Astoria with Love.

This pitch black Russian Imperial is a perfect storm of rich roast, nutty aroma, and chocolate flavors.

Pours black with a finger and a half of dark tan foam. Aroma is roasty, toasty, nutty, earthy, and caramely malts with minor notes of caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Very simple, hitting quality stout notes all the way through. Flavor profile is just as solid and simple, hitting notes of roasty, toasty, nutty, caramely, and earthy malts. Toffee and molasses add just a touch of sweetness, but the brunt of the flavor is standard, quality stout notes. Mouth feel is medium-thick with some gritty texture up front. Real non-chalant, but solid. Overall, standard stout with quality notes and texture all the way through.

Served in a 16oz stemless wine glass from a 16oz can.

Pours quite thick and very nearly black, with half a finger of tan head that fizzes away quickly. Prune, cocoa, and yeast on the nose. Prune, light banana and other Belgian-style esters on the palate, accented by vanilla, mild anise, and some vinous tannins. Lovely, soft mouthfeel. Quite interesting, and a winning combination in my book.

Thanks, Chad!

Got this from Chad in Las Vegas. Had heard of Fort George Brewery, but this would be my first time having one of their beers. Online description read, “Before Matryoshka, there was a darkness – a stout that we hold dear to our hearts – from Fort George to you, from Astoria with Love. This pitch black Russian Imperial is a perfect storm of rich roast, nutty aroma, and chocolate flavors.”

Poured a pitch black color with four fingers of rocky khaki tan head. Could see many bubble streams creeping up along the sides of the glass. World-class spiderweb foamy lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled baker’s chocolate, toast, nutty malts, cocoa, malt chocolate, caramel, roasted grain and light molasses. Not much more from the can. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste was at least as good as the nose. First thought was how smooth it was for 9.4 pct. ABV. Got baker’s chocolate, toast, malt chocolate, cocoa, nutty malts, roasted grain, light molasses, semi-char wood and caramel. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.75)

Just a terrific Russian Imperial Stout. Glad I got a chance to try it. (Overall - 4.25)

Dark amber brown brew with plenty of foam in the Belle-Vue Gueuze glass. It's surprisingly light in the mouth, as clouds of carbonation levitate this sturdy concoction. Roasted grain aroma. Sweet malt but not sugary or syrupy. Bitter chocolate is the taste.

Caramel and a cocoa finish. Pleasantly bitter aftertaste with an alcohol warmth. Overall this is an excellent big stout with balanced sugars and bitterness, strong but sudsy. From the 16 oz can purchased in northern Washington.

Served in 12oz goblet. poured solid black color with 3/4 inch of medium brown head that had very good retention and good lacing.

The aroma had solid base malts, good roast (although, the roast did start to edge into coffee territory), and just a touch of sweetness.

Pretty similar on the tongue, the roast mellowed out noticeably, and a bit of alcohol heat on the finish.

The body was a bit thin for a big stout, was smooth, and had no alcohol burn.

Drinkability was good, my glass went down quite nicely. Overall, a very good beer, that is certainly worth a spot on your wants list.

Pour is a dark cola almost-black with a massive frothy light brown head that remains large and in charge and doesn't want to leave an inch of clear glass through which to watch its transgressions.

Nose is roasty and lightly sweet. Even without the blurb on the side of the can I could be convinced there were nutty elements to the nose as well.

Everything starts off groovy-oovy with soft cocoa and coffee. Some mild roast and nuttiness on the back end. But I keep getting this like...green onion? It's actually not overtly UNPLEASANT, it just seems super out of place. Given no one else mentions it, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it's something I ate just before drinking this. Something on my sandwich maybe? Anyway. Just in case, for posterity, there it is.
Anyway, overall it's just so incredibly smoothe and balanced and softly easy to drink... it's dangerous where it sits nearing 10% with how easily it goes down.
This is an incredible brew, and we're lucky to have it as part of the regular rotation up here in the PNW.
