Crianza belongs to the family of Flemish Red-Brown ales. Born out of a mixed fermentation, it spent more than a year in oak barrels. Its body has copper reflections and its aspect is limpid. Its foam is beige and creamy, with a nice hold. It smells like fallen apples, Northern cherries, with a woody and winey accent, and the slightly animal touch given by the Brettanomyces yeast. In the mouth, these flavours are completed by notes of Agen plums, blackberries, spices (cinnamon, cloves, liquorice), and a very lightly caramelised touch of malt and biscuit. Its mineral and slightly sour character makes it surprisingly refreshing. 7,4% abv (hardly perceptible), for the first time available in 33cl bottles only, and in limited amounts.

At the sovereign in DC, from a 330 ml bottle into a bar glass. Clear reddish amber with a nice 1/2 finger crisp white tight white head, a little retention. Nothing really dominates here, and nothing is too bright or too musty or sour, but it isn’t exactly muted either...just a lot of great balance: some berries, some orchard fruit, little citrus, little warm bread crust, some subtle and mild baking spices. Creamy and smooth feel.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch light pink head over a pinkish-brown body with some lacing; and the head not giving up its claim to the surface of the beer. Nice nose of oak, dark fruit (dried and fresh), and grapefruit. Taste mirrors nose with the sourness outlasting the slight sweetness throughout. Finishes dry and slightly tannic. Wonderful! Nice feel and overall, another winner from my 2nd favorite brewery in Brussels and recommend this highly. Cheers!
