Draft at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego.
Pours a dark chocolate brown color with mahogany edges and one finger beige head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Chunks of lacing left behind.
Subtle earthy aroma with a strong malt presence overpowering the hops. Slightly smokey/toasty with fait pine and citrus but just too malty for my liking. Nose improves slightly as it warms.
Medium bodied with a nice balance of dry bitterness, subtle tropical and citrus fruit sweetness and slightly roasted malt. Not overly dry and bitter nor is it overly roasted or sweet. Well balanced with hints of toast, cocoa, oatmeal and caramel as well as some biscuit and hazelnut. Complex but hops are never overpowered, lingering throughout into a dry finish. Could be a bit hoppier but still pretty good.

Poured from a draft into a pint glass at KnB Wine Cellars in San Diego. Color was pitch black with a tiny amount of purple in there. Probably an inch of head. Plenty of bubbly and frothy lacing on the top. Good amount of consistent film on the sides.
Smelled of citrus hops right away. Also some coffee and chocolate malts in there.
Tasted chocolate and coffee malts up front. Citrus and bitter hops on the tongue at the end, maybe grapefruit?
Full body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.
About as good a beer as one could have expected, especially considering my bad experience with their regular double IPA.
