On tap at Brasserie V in Madison, Wisconsin. 5oz served in a minisnifter.

Pours a dark brown body, fairly dark, half finger offwhite head. Fair lacing, minimal retention. Smells of hefty bourbon, a bit of char, sweet brown sugar and molasses, hints of coffee and raw vanilla aromas. Not too promising, but I'll take it. Flavour is an intense combination of bourbon, char, molasses, caramel. That's a lot of sweetness and char, smoke. A bit of campfire to it. Coffee and vanilla are drowned out by all of this, but they are there. Mouthfeel is medium-fuller bodied, lower carbonation, slightly syrupy consistency, a big beer with a fair bit of heat to it. Not my favourite, I think I prefer this beer without the extra adjuncts as they are distracting and almost set me up for a bit of disappointment.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear jet black in color with light amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some faint dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy foamy dark tan head that reduces to a small thin patch and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of sweet vanilla and caramel with moderate aromas of coffee. There is also a light to moderate aroma of roasted malts, smoked malts, toasted oak barrels, and bourbon.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of roasted malts and caramel malts with a light to moderate amount of sweetness. That is followed by a moderate to strong flavor of moderately sweet vanilla, coffee, toasted oak, and bourbon. Finally there is a light to moderate amount of smokiness in the finish. Light to moderate amounts of roasty bitterness which lingers through the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Very rich in flavor and aroma but incredibly smooth and easy to drink for the strength of the beer (13.5% ABV). The sweetness of the vanilla and the bitterness of the coffee really balance the smokiness. Definitely a sipping beer but a very enjoyable one.
