Rum barrel-aged ale with lime, grapefruit, almond, orange flower water, and spices

Mai Zombie begins with a Tiki-inspired base beer as the foundation for the spirited nuances enkindled by the rum barrels it rested in for over a year. Inspired by one of our favorite island drinks, we used lime and grapefruit zest, orange flower water, almonds, allspice, and hints of cinnamon and ginger for a unique Tiki beer experience. Exotic, tropical, and like nothing you’ve tasted before.

Man I think this was the beer that sent me over the edge to finally not renew my Hoarders Society membership.

We had this after the Eclipse party 2021. You'd think that would make a palate ready for a 16.7% beer, but I don't think anything could prepare me for what we were up against. Pours a light brown amberish color. Small head, off white, 1/5". I think the appearance is the best thing about the beer. The aroma isn't totally offputting, but it doesn't really smell like 'beer'. There is a heavy rum and lime presence in the aroma.

The taste holy crap. Why is it so hot and bitter? Ok it has a massive abv, so I get that, but dang if some bigger beers of theirs aren't much easier to drink. I guess they really dropped a lot of grapefruit here to have such a bitterness impact, and its the type that just binds with the alcohol heat to make this beer challenging as can be to drink. Tiki drinks are more enjoyable than this. This is an exercise in trench warfare to get through the whole bottle, even split amongst several people.

So this is the problem, when you forsake access to beers I love (Oude Tart, Tart of Darkness) while continually churning out massive 17% beers that I rarely have the desire or people around to tackle, it becomes the ol' diminishing returns thing. I put this beer in the pantheon of Melange 11 and Roble Blanco.

750ml bottle poured into a teku

A- pours a clear amber color with a one-finger foamy white head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- aroma initially smells like cola and lime. Citrus zest, some floral notes, fresh ginger, cinnamon, even a marzipan note. Undertones of rum close it out, making this one of the most unique smelling beers I've had

T- fruity notes of zesty orange and lemon up front, followed by nutty almond, cola, cinnamon & ginger. The finish brings out a boozy rum note, as well as more cola, citrus zest & cinnamon. Lingers of zest and cola

M medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a warming, slightly boozy finish

O- as advertised, one of the most unique beers I've had in quite a while, reminds me of a rum cocktail
