We made you a beer you can’t refuse. Inspired by the swirling flavors of coffee cake, The Grindfather is a rich blend of our pastry stout base with a bit of bourbon-barrel aged stout. We then treated it with copious amounts of cinnamon, roasted pecans, vanilla, and coffee from our friends at Mostra Coffee. Revenge— er, this beer— is a dish best served cold.

Its funny how a picture can unintentionally reveal so much. In this one, I'm holding a can of Grindfather, barefoot, wearing my Original Bro Matt Riddle shorts, at Frontier Days in Pershing County, Nevada.

Anyhoo, hold on to your hats, but this barrel aged imperial stout pours: black. Hot damn. So revelatory. Brown head, 1/3" scaled. The aroma was pretty kick ass, tons of coffee, solid amount of bourbon influence. Usual reference drop of chocolate, roasted grain. Cinnamon? I didn't really catch it here, which is weird because I can pick up on a mere hint of it in chili. There was a nuttiness so lets call it pecan. Vanilla, not yet, not in the nose.

The taste was pretty nice. Vanilla showed up in the taste and mouthfeel compared to the aroma. Gritty, dark coffee pairing with heavily roasted malt, smooth bourbon and vanilla as good counterparts. Hid alcohol decently, was a joy to drink throughout. I'm not really sure about calling it a pastry stout, it wasn't sweet, I thought the coffee and roasted malt were bigger than the vanilla and cinnamon.

Canned 11/11/21

Pours jet black and thick with a two-finger khaki head, which hangs on as you delve further into the glass. Beautiful beer.

Smells heavily of cinnamon with a hint of coffee at the back end. The first few sips flip the script as the coffee roast dominates with a hint of cinnamon. There is a faint nuttiness that I attribute to the pecan. As with most of these canned pastry offerings from the Bruery, good luck picking up any barrel!

I did split a can with a buddy when this was fresh but didn’t rate it at the time, and the cinnamon took over everything. It’s much more subdued now.

Really enjoyable beer, and glad to have another can on standby, but I don’t think I’m gonna wait too long to pop it.
