Decided to stop by the Bruery for First Firkin Friday last week.
A - Looks like most hand pumped cask brews - persistent khaki foam that adheres to the sides of the glass. Body is a lightly hazed cherrywood color.
S - Smells like rye bread and spices (nutmeg?), oak, vanilla beans, toasted grains, earthiness, and a hint of chocolate. Oak character grows as this warms (although it was already fairly warm to start). a little understated.
T - Taste again has rye zest, spices, vanilla beans, and less oak than I expected from the nose. Hint of baker's chocolate as well. Alcohol is well-hidden, and spice is kept reasonably in check. There's a very Christmas-y vibe to it, and it reminds me of some hearty cakes I've had.
M - Smooth, creamy, medium-body, with low carbonation. Finishes with moderate residual stickiness, and maybe a hint of alcohol warmth.
D - The cask serving type made this quite easy to drink - possibly more so than regular Rugbrød. That being said, it's not a flavor profile that I would crave often - more of an occasional type of thing. Interesting to try, but not essential.

On cask at the Bruery
A: The pour is fantastic looking with a dark brown body, hints of amber, and a tall, creamy khaki head.
S: The oak is very apparent right away, as is the rye which gives the beer a nice spiciness. Plenty of bread, somewhat toasty, with a slight chocolate note and a hint of molasses and brown sugar. The vanilla is there, but it's not as in the forefront as I would have anticipated.
T: Vanilla bean sweetness is strong with plenty of oak as well. Spice notes both from the yeast and the rye and a charred character from the oak. Mild to moderate chocolate and molasses notes.
M: Medium in body with smooth, creamy carbonation.
O: Much better than regular Rugbrod. The two additives really stood out nicely.

On cask at The Bruery,
A: Pours a dark amber with a full off-white head, solid retention and lace.
S: Pungent nose with coffee, wood, vanilla and brown sugar.
T: Nice maltiness and spice from the base beer with a noticable oak component. Woody, dark chocolate, good overall flavours.
M: Medium-bodied, light carbonation, fairly smooth.
O: Nice mix of flavours, clearly different from the original, but nothing mind blowing.
