Bruery Blackbery Sour

A: It is amber with light pink hues at the edges. It appears tame enough, similar to Madame Rose or the like.

S:: There is a raspberry tartness with an incredibly drying wine profile. The nostrils recoil at these scorched earth scents. The lactic and acidic vinegar is a solid foreshadowing of the punishment your taste buds are going to be subjected to.

T: Holy hell. This is the most tart sour that I have ever had. I thought that the Framboise de Amarosa was over the top, this feels like it was made in a lab. The bitter tartness is incredible and it makes me flinch and the drying is relentless. I feel like I am being hazed into the Gueuze Delta Wild house.

M: The mouthfeel is very thin and tingly all over. Again it is at its core just super drying and angry. The funk mixes with the heat and tastes almost like stomach acid. The tannins and Brett give it a strange incredibly acidic character that is tough to get down.

D: Again it is all spikes and sharp skins all over. It is an understatement to say that this is tough to put down. I love most every Bruery endeavor but this seems like a punitive mad science project. I can’t support this kind of chicanery beyond an example of pure madness.

Narrative: “Well if you can’t perform a scorpion into seconds with a DECENT TURNOUT, then maybe you need to lose some weight.” The 7 year old stood stunned before Sherry Sourmane, the most dour faced dance instructor in the tristate area. “I just..my tummy hurts and…” The room rattled with the clack of a 6 inch stiletto upon the ground. “Out of my sight, you like wretch.” She was a sour, stern instructor, best enjoyed in small doses. When dance class was over she took to berating the parents in turn. Each fully-grown person in attendance received a fully tailored dress down from Ms. Sourmane. John Marks collected his child and walked solemnly to his car.

On tap at Bruery Provisions. In a flight. Poured into a wine taster glass. Pours a zinfandale red color. Pretty clear. No head or lacing.

Aroma has a formaldehyde character. (use to catch insects so I know). Some cherry. Faint blueberry. Funk.

Tastes the same. Bit of formaldehyde. Pretty sour. Bit of blue berry and malt.

Mouthfeel is smooth. Semi dry. Nice carb.

Overall not that great. Couldn't get over the formaldehyde. Reminded me of the jar I use to kill my butterfly's in.

On-tap at The Bruery

A: The pour is a purple-pinkish color with a fluffy white head. A few little floaters of blueberry skin.

S: Tartness is immediately evident with a nice lemony note and mild vinegar. A little bit of funk to it, mostly in the form of straw. Some blueberry aroma but not a ton. That said, there's a nice fruity note.

T: The flavor is certainly quite tart. Some vinegar to go along with the lactic tartness. Plenty of fruit, some berries and miscellaneous red fruits. Not necessarily anything that says "blueberry", though. Mild oak and a bit of fruity sweetness

M: The body is medium and there is a decent amount of carbonation.

O: Quite the puckering finish on this beer and a nice sour. This one doesn't quite live up to the "Kriek" that was being poured at Sour Fest, though.

On-tap at The Bruery,

A: Pours a sparkling purple red with a light to medium white head, some lace.

S: Very much a yeasty funky nose, some husky grain and fragrant fruit.

T: Wheaty/bready flavour with a lot of acid, lactic plus some noticable acetic. The fruit is quite tasty with blueberries of course and a lot of red currant.

M: Good firm acid, quite a tart finish were the acetic play can be a tad too overt.

O: My favourite The Bruery beer of the day, a very tasty effort, hope they bring this back.
