Oaked Sour Ale with Boysenberries and Sea Salt

Presenting Boysenberries Are Blue, a new oaked sour ale with boysenberries and sea salt. Throughout fermentation, oak cubes and boysenberries coalesce, leading to fragrant notes of sweet berry and gentle oak interlaced with the tartness of boysenberries. Subtle undertones of oak accentuate the berry’s brightness, while a hint of sea salt provides a balance to each sip.

really drinkable and actually quite sexy bottle of beer here, done with boysenberries and sea salt, subtle wood on this, way less sour than i am used to from these guys in this style range, and the salt does a whole lot for it, really killer mineral profile, drying finish, and not so fruited that its all you taste, good restraint here in the name of complexity. the color is surprisingly not that fruity looking, maybe faint pink, but more golden, pretty clear most of the way, and kind of casually carbonated, some carbonation and modest head activity, but this one isnt leaping out of the bottle, which makes it look a little more full bodied than it is, but its pretty anyway, somewhat unassuming. the nose is curiously lush, almost verdant to me, an aloe thing, a wetness to the salt, like a brine vibe, more salty right away to me than expected, with some pleasant tartness from the fruit that brings notes of wild blueberries and blackberries together with a tannic wine grape element, lemony bacterial sourness making my mouth water on top of that, not neutral on the malt here either which i like, keeps it beery, light crystal and maybe some wheat, soft cereal character. the flavor is quick, not that it all hits at once but that its salty enough to be kind of cut off and gone before where a normal sour might finish, the fruit is early then, the grain is supportive, almost a granola thing to it, nice balance, lighter than it looks to drink, some funk and mild wood here too, but this is more clean sour than wild sour, trace apricot in here, rose wine, hibiscus, and the good flaked french sea salt really defining the back end, quick and clean for what it is, refreshing, almost soothing, restorative, like an electrolyte drink, i feel hydrated, and overall this is smartly designed and majorly well executed, one of my favorites from them in awhile, the mouthfeel is real unique. awesome beer worth the price they ask for it.

Clear, amber color. Nice, white head. Funky aroma with notes of oak and blueberries. Tart taste with some salt at the end. Some light boysenberry notes are present as well.

750 ml bottle, 2024 edition, bottled 07/01/24. Served in a Teku, the beer pours a mostly clear orange/amber color with about an inch and a half off-white head that stuck around a while. Decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice but a bit subtle, the brew smells like boysenberries, salt, oak and some bready malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with more of a kick and some earthiness noticeable too. Definitely tart! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this one, worth a try if you get the chance.
