one of the straight from the barrel selections at their idaho spot, didnt realize they keep beer in them and actually offer it up, super cool, and this one is delicious, a blend of black tuesday and something else to get the abv to legal range in idaho i think, tons of vanilla added too, over the top but really good, and cool to drink it still, this is a fine type of thing to have totally uncarbonated and at room temperature, actually a cool way to serve it up, and im glad we figured out we could drink from this thing yesterday! some shine on it, lots of viscosity, and a deep black color. the nose is umami like soy sauce to me with a whole heap of vanilla bean intensity, front to back its all vanilla, some roast and dark cocoa with it, some bourbon in the mix of course, a lot of that blows off after a few minutes, licorice, old wet wood, char, coffee, and brown sugar sweetness, heavy heavy vanilla almost at the expense of other elements, nice as it is. the flavor runs in the same direction, a vanilla bomb through and through, deep earthy umami, rich like almost a beef demiglace type thing going on, so sweet its almost salty if that makes sense, nice grain roastiness with some coffee and tobacco character, boozy vanilla extract stays central, long on the palate after the swallow, both strong on the exhale too, and even the pizza i follow this up with a half hour later is tasting vanilla to me. sticky but also slick and slippery, huge and palate coating mouthfeel without any bubbles. this is one of those beers id be curious to see how some carbonation and refrigeration might impact it, but also it seems in finished form even without all that, heavy and opulent and over the top in a way thats still appealing, wonder if it will get packaged or just exist like this. fun to try, will try the other straight from the barrel selections next time i visit, so cool they have these available!
