Name: Cherry Chocolate Rain
Brewery: The Bruery
Location: Placentia, CA
Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Pastry Stout
ABV: 19%
Canned: 31 October 2019
Date:14 December 2025
I pulled this behemoth out of the cellar for its day. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 54 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, one-fingered, tan head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is dark brown, nearly black, with an SRM of 36, and opaque. The beer's appearance is average, given its 19% ABV.
Nosing the glass, I smell chocolate, tart cherries, white pepper, earthiness, caramel, toffee, molasses, spicy rye, oak, char, figs, leather, bready dark-roasted malts, anise, grassy notes, and raisins.
Sipping the beer: tart cherries, chocolate, medium-roasted coffee, white pepper, floral esters, earthiness, caramel, figs, raisins, dates, rye, oak, char, grass, anise, leather, tobacco, bready, and dark-roasted malts.
The mouthfeel is chewy, finishing thick and a bit warm. The body is heavy and has low carbonation.
Final Impression: The cherry flavor is not overpowering and not like a cough syrup vibe. The chocolate is high-quality, with a nice rye-barrel finish. The beer is delightful and not too boozy.
