Cask at Reserve Society Party 2012

Pours mahogany in color with minimal head as it was poured from the cask. Obviously some smoke to the beer, but not overwhelmingly smokey. A decent amount of chocolate and a nice roast quality. A touch woody with a bit of peanut butter. The peanut butter, dark chocolate, and vanilla really come through on the palate. There is a decent smokiness, too. Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. It does have a little "meatiness" to it, but surprisingly not as much as some other smoked beers.

Cask

The Bruery RS Initiation Party 2012

Nearly black in color with a very small brown head that leaves no lacing.

The aroma is very smoke-forward, even meaty. It isn't quite as complex as the rye-barrel version. This one is dominated by smoke, meat, and a hint of vanilla.

The flavor follows very similarly, with the meat flavor dominating, and sweeter, earthier elements presenting only in the background.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Appropriate.

A decent and interesting version of a great beer.

Cask at The Reserve Society Initiation Celebration.

A: Murky dark brown bordering on black. Fast fading beige head.

S: Bacon smoke, oak, vanilla, lots of smoked meat. Nutty notes are pervasive. Smoke is pretty strong here compared to the Rye version I had a month ago. I assume the smoke faded quite a bit. There's evident booze. Bourbon is present throughout.

T: Very meaty, smoked bacon is strong, blending with bourbon and vanilla. Salty and oaky. Nice chocolate profile.

M: Lower full body with low carbonation.

Overall: An interesting variation on an already smoky beer. I dug it.

On cask at the Bruery Reserve Society initiation party at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, CA.

Pours an opaque dark brown with no head and no lace. Smell is very nice with smoked malt, smoked meats, bacon, and alcohol. Taste is of smoked malt, bacon, and roasted peanuts for some reason. This beer has a low level of carbonation with a slightly flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer and an interesting treatment but I prefer the original Smoking Wood much more.
