on tap at their awesome northside location, i had no idea these guys were making beers like this. its a rye saison, and a good one as the clean saisons go, usually not my thing, i like the funk, but this is really tasty and the rye gives it just enough depth to be intriguing even though the yeast is a familiar french type, estery and simple and somewhat unexciting, but the beer is real dry and light, and so the earthy, lightly spicy rye really stands out. its cereal forward in the malt without hardly any appreciable sweetness, pale wheat, pils type barley malt, and the rye is all, crackery and fresh. there are some peppery notes in the yeast that work with the rye as well, and the light fruit tones of pear and green grape work in well too. the carbonation is high and the finish is fast, this is refreshing for the style, and an easy drinking glass of beer overall. i like the little bit of hop bitterness on the back end, grassy and cohesive with the other elements, and i like the liveliness this has. never seen any fermentation forward beers from kettlehouse before, now i hope to see more! a cool surprise when we were in.
