This bottling of Four was brewed in June and aged in two pinot noir casks, each filled with over one hundred pounds of cherries. The fruit is a variety named brooks from Baird Family Orchards that has a beautifully deep flavor and color. We decided to try an experiment and leave the stems on, and the resulting beer developed quickly with a huge tannic profile and character reminiscent of some red wines. It was not inoculated with additional yeasts or bacteria, so the cherries dominate the profile and provide a natural acidity. The beer is tasting bright now, but the tannins should maintain the structure and preserve it well for a long time.

Carbonation is restrained. Smell has a hint of cough syrup and sweet cherry when cold, but the wine begins to pop as it warms. Looks a bit like an oud bruin and has some of those characteristics, but with no vinegar notes. Lots of pinot and some tannins for structure. A really nice beer.

Thanks to queens1130 for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

Bottle # 160/198.

Pours a murky dark red with a foamy reddish-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour with malt, sweet and sour sauce, and cherry aromas. Taste is much the same with sour cherry and wine flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with an interesting sweet and sour sauce quality that comes through more in the aroma.

Thanks for trading this to me, Jeremy! Shared with Brian last night.

Pouring a cherry red with a pink head that leaves a little lace, this looks gorgeous. The nose is pure cherry juice, deep and rich with plenty of skin and a little bit of pit. There's a mild bandaid note as well, lending a medicinal note. I really can't say there's much barrel character here - the cherries just dominate. While a comparison to a kriek is harsh, I can't help myself - the funk isn't there and neither is the sourness. Plus, the Four does seem like a weakish beer for the cherries. Solid.

The palate opens with a big cherry flavor, juicy, ripe and bright with skin tannins playing a secondary role. Again, unlike a kriek where the cherries and the base lambic complement each other, on this beer, the base Four does seem to dilute the cherry character. Wheat is noticeable adding a slight husky flavor. Drying on the finish with lingering cherries and some skin, this beer is light in body and moderately carbonated. Solid if mildly disappointing stuff

From notes.

The beer pours rose colored amber color with pretty good head retention and lacing. The nose is probably the best part of this beer, as I get considerable dark cherry, with a hint of underlying wine and light sour. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, though the cherry flavor wasn't as pronounced on the palate as it was on the nose. The sour is dialed way down as well, which is generally OK for me, but it made the beer come across as a bit simple and one dimensional. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, and I thought the finish just a bit short. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and there's no doubt this is a pretty easy to enjoy beer from Upright.

Definitely not a bad beer, but I confess it was not up to the standards I usually expect from Upright.

Bottle 10/198

A - Pours a dark ruby red with a fizzy pink head that is gone fast.

S - Lots of syrupy cherry, subtle barrel and pinot.

T - Tart pinot and oak, then nice cherry, finishes funky.

D - Light body with low carbonation.

O - Nice cherry and pinot battling it out, not overly sweet. Very tasty and nice.
