La Saison Basse is relatively dark for a self-proclaimed Saison. It has the stained, ruddy amber colour of time- and weather-worn brick. Its surface appears covered in fresh-fallen snow, appropriate because this is a winter seasonal and doubly so since the visibility is on-par with that of a whiteout.
The aroma is a fairly tight-wound package that, with time, aeration and continued attention, gradually reveals impressive, nuanced smells that are well worth searching for. Equal parts savory, spicy, and sweet, this is clearly a multi-layered beer that one really should not rush...
The palate is more accessible; cardamon and vanilla pod are unmistakable flavours that are well suited to the backdrop of brown sugar and light caramel maltiness. The subtle fruit esters of the yeast provide equally classic holiday tastes of sweet clementines and tart cranberry, with dry fruitcake notes too.
There are just enough suggestions of figgy pudding and eggnog spice (nutmeg, vanilla), combined with a well masked but just-beneath-the-surface 8.5% alcohol, that each sip provides all the Yuletide cheer and warmth one needs at this cold, dark time of the year. It is a new holiday favourite in my household.
La Saison Basse is as much a Christmas-time comfort as the crackle of the fireplace and the smell of the tree. If typical Saisons conjure all the sun and warmth of summer, this one does every bit the same to project the cozy, warming, cheerfulness of a Canadian December. Make this a yearly tradition.

Bottle: Poured a clear brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of caramelized sugar with some spices is interesting but not what I was expecting. Taste is also dominated by caramelized malt with some residual sugar notes and some notes of Christmas cookie notes. Body is pretty full with good carbonation. A bit heavy for my taste with a bit too much residual sugar notes but enjoyable nonetheless.
