Typical daison profile, but a little alcohol burn.

La Saison Haute looks quintessential for the style: clear(ish) and cast in the soft gold tone of early morning sun. Also proper for a Saison, it must be poured at a tilted angle to temper the bubbles; head will expand as far as you'll let it (and much of it stays on the glass long after the liquid disappears).

The label lists 'spices' but reveals nothing specific. The aroma is much the same: some kind of spice (above and beyond that inherent to the yeast) is detectable but which ones specifically is tough to say with certainty. There's something a little different about this bouquet... lavender? ginger? clove?

That's not to mention the coriander, peppercorn, and orange peel notes more customary for the style. Subtle undertones of vanilla give some lift to dry, almost stale tastes of cereal grain and straw. Those indistinct hints of clove, ginger and lavender also provide additional floral, spicy dimensions.

But while it checks off all appropriate boxes (prickly carbonation, citrusy esters, restrained alcohol), truthfully I don't love it. Most 750ml bottles of Saison prompt me to grab a good book and find a shady tree under which to spend an afternoon. But I find myself laboring through this one.

There's no reconciling this, especially given how much I enjoy the style. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with La Saison Haute, but the fact it's betwixt and between the traditional 'funky farmhouse' Saison and the zestful, fruit-forward rendition makes it not especially attractive in my mind.

750ml bottle poured into tulip 4/10/14, cheers Phyl21ca for sending me the bottle

A murky golden yellow, enough clarity to see a couple bubbles but I know there's some bubbles hidden because I get a couple short lived fingers of foam that leave some random patches of lace

S farmhouse yeast, citrus rind, spice I can't place, perfume, marmalade, clove, banana, some dry cereal and faint booze

T spicy, yeasty, boozy for the style, not quite sour but a little pucker, grainy, more spice, floral and herbal notes

M leaning towards full, foamy but the style permits, some heat, a little grit, heavy spice and grains on the finish

O a little intense for the style, lots of spicy yeast almost overwhelms, decent but not that drinkable for the style

Almost leaning towards a Triple, the yeast profiles more Saison but its boozy, spicy, and lots of malty cereal notes, sub out the yeast and add a little brewers candy and you have a decent Triple

SERVICE: Bottle

A:
Pours a very cloudy gold color with an immense frothy white head that takes its time in settling from half the glass down to a rocky half finger and, if let sit, a film. Good retention; little 'clouds' of lacing. (3.75)

S:
Doughy spice. Floral dryness, chalk, baking spices, just risen dough, orange zest, white pepper. (3.75)

T:
Rich and yeasty-sweet. Sweet and fresh up front with a quick rise in medicinal bitterness, and doughy flowers flavors, and a barely-perceptibly tart finish. (3.5)

M:
Medium bodied with good carbonation and a velvety mouthfeel. Not terribly dry, quick finish. (3.75)

O:
Tasty saison.
This is a well-made beer by a brewery I have never tried before.
Starting with the cool labeling it is a fine looking beer, the beer in the glass looks just as good. The nose is nice and phenolic and thick and Belgian. Taste-wise it took me a while to get into it, honestly. It kinda tastes like a sweet hefeweizen and has a real uptick in bitterness in the middle. At first I thought it was the yeast, but it could partially be the hops as well (maybe Saaz?--I always find them to be among the 'toniciest'). Palate-wise it is unobtrusive, although I think it could benefit from being a bit drier.
Also, it is pretty goddamned yeasty. I loves me some yeast, and never shy away from it in a bottle (unless they thought it necessary to include something on the label saying I shouldn't), but it is a little much both appearance- and taste-wise.
Otherwise, good beer; makes me excited to try some of their other stuff. Would have again; worth a shot. (3.75)

Special thanks to Phyl21ca for sending this as part of another great trade.

A: Pale brick yellow with a slight hint of green topped with a giant 4 fingers of toothpaste like frothy head. Holds well to the glass leaving veins of lacing across the glass.

S: First scent is a full floral bouquet with grassy notes and chalky minerals. Pale malts and yeasty bread follow up mid way through. Slight lemon notes from start to finish with spices and honey.

T: Pale honey with ripe bananas, spices of cloves and coriander. Reminds me of cream of wheat cereal, with a peppery finish. Slight alcohol at the very end.

M: Snappy at the front of the tongue but settles down rather quick. some alcohol esters at the very end vaporize suggesting the strength.

O: A saison that skirts a triple with the malts, spices and yeasty characteristics. Goes well with dinner as the alcohol is notable throughout. A unique approach to a saison that doesn't shy away from bold spices.

Appearance: It has a nice deep golden/yellow color to it. It has a nice thick off-white head that dies down slowly and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of Belgian yeast, peppery spices, grassy hops, bananas and cloves.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some yeast, peppery spices, cloves, banana, a touch of wheat and some floral/grassy hops.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Half pint at the brewpub. From notes.

A - Poured with a dark orange colour with good carbonation. Hazy with no head retention or lace from a head that started at slightly off white with one finger.

S - Honey, some floral notes, and a grassy note alongside a juicy hop element.. Most of that took some digging. The aroma was subtle but interesting.

T - Quite nice and hoppy. Floral, honey, a strong hop citrus note, slight funk and grass with some lighter wheat notes.

M - GOod carbonation, medium body with a sweet/hoppy fruit finish.

O/D - A nice fairly well hopped saison with less funk but quite nice and drinkable with no alcohol evident. Solid.

on-tap at the BDT brewpub. A mild spicy aroma. Light yellow with good lace. Peppery, citrus, and wheat and sweet cardomon, creamy mouthfeel, with bananna characteristics. In the style, but not great representative of the style. Drinkable but not overally drinkable.

Draft: Poured a hazy amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of spices which may includes cloves with dry rustic esters. Taste is a well made mix between a dry malt backbone with good notes of spices including cloves. Body is full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well made with loads of character and great drinkability factor.
