500 ml bottle served just above fridge temperature into an Upper Canada Brewing pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for around $3.75 CDN. Best before November 2016.

Appearance - pours a coppery coloured beer with substantial haze. A small half finger of off-white head rests on top and dissipates quickly.

Smell - loads of apricot and pear initially, almost so strong to be artificial smelling. Oodles of sweetness on the nose. Needs a little balance but nose is certainly aromatic.

Taste - mildly bitter, with some apricot sweetness getting through, but more earthy bitter than expected. Juicy fruit flavours not nearly as apparent as was on the nose.

Mouthfeel - smooth and light, easy drinking body and low and soft carbonation.

Overall - Black Creek's Apricot Ale is a beer with a great nose, but the flavor isn't as juicy as the nose would suggest and creates a bit of a letdown. Still not a bad summer quencher that may be worth your while if fruit beers are your thing.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Oct 2016 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a cloudy, translucent orange-amber colour, with one finger of soapy, foamy white head that recedes to a soapy, bubbly cap and collar over the next couple of minutes. Good lace. Any fan of Fuzzy Peaches candy will likely appreciate this brew's aroma, as it boasts an enjoyably juicy note of apricot, along with hints of red licorice, Anjou pear and some biscuity caramel malt sweetness.

A decent fruit beer, crossed with an English-style pale ale. Brown sugar and bready, biscuity malts come through, with fruity flavours of plum, apricot, apple, strawberry and peach contributing. Restrained British hop astringency on the back end - leafy and grassy, with an earthy bitterness that persists into the aftertaste. Light in body, with minimal carbonation levels - like a lot of Black Creek beers, this one feels a little flat, but given their "ye olden style" gimmick I can't really consider that a flaw. Kind of interesting, but not something I think I'd return to.

Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. I really want to love Black Creek's Apricot Ale - that delicious aroma is truly enticing - but unfortunately the flavour profile leaves a bit to be desired. It starts off juicy and sweet, but the malts aren't compelling and the hops kind of clash with the fruitiness. It's just not a very cohesive flavour. I could take this beer or leave it; if an apricot ale sounds interesting to you then by all means, give it a shot, but it's not a beer I'll actively recommend.
