This is what happens when an American Amber meets a German Dunkel. Aromatic and Munich malts yield a slight sweetness balanced with a hint of chocolate roast. The result is a very approachable beer with a smooth distinctive taste.

12 oz. bottle, no date that I can see. A new one to me from Big Muddy Brewing, acquired a single bottle as part of a mixed six pack.
Poured to a Piraat snifter.
Dark mahogany-chestnut color in body. Barely any conjuration of head, merely some khaki-tan bubbles that collect as a ring. Spotty lace but none really sticks.
Aroma is dark, warm, bready. Hints of smoke, chocolate, dark fruit, figs.
Taste follows - dark, figgy, fruity, with notes of nuttiness and smoked malts. Brown & bready tasting. It's ok.
Feel is average. Not particularly well-carb'd or easy to drink, though for the style, I don't think that is particularly a bad thing. A very average, middle of the road offering here from Big Muddy, probably not something I'd drink again or recommend, but solid middle ground if you are interested in this style.

Pours an amber brown with a good bit of off-white head that recedes to a thin layer on top. Smell is roasted malts, toasty grains, bit of german hops. Tastes nice and malty, lots of toasty bready notes and a medium body. Mouthfeel is moderately bubbly, closes out with a slightly overshot hop astringency and bitterness. Solid, enjoyable beer, but probably wouldn't buy again.
Feels much more like a German dunkel lager than a red ale.

Pours a clear reddish brown, small eggshell head fades quickly, no lacing. Snot locker gets a hint of warm bread, a bit of chocolate. and some malts. Taste buds get some sweet caramel a bit of hops. Thin not much carbonation. Overall, not too bad, but it'sa one'n done.

Undated bottle; drank 9/22/22 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque brown/purple appearance.
A rough pour yielded a small khaki head; decent lace.
Mild plum & faint fresh earth notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Mild plum & faint fresh earth flavors.
This wasn't as awful as the bottle I had about 7 years ago (I think that was skunked), but there isn't much here. Not one to seek out.

Poured into a snifter. A clear chestnut brown color with a modest light tan head that left quickly. Aromas of roasty malt, caramel, some chocolate, and cherries. Taste featured caramel, burnt coffee, toast, some chocolate, and a hint of tart cherry. Medium-bodied and medium carbed with a sharp, metallic finish. Overall this was ok but the taste seemed muddled.

The Big Muddy is staying within its banks.
At least, that's what Saluki tells me.
It is a nice simple beer: takes dunkel malts and makes an ale, but nothing extreme; no hyper-fusion.
Just a pleasant beer that Looks just different enough. Smells malty. Tastes that way, but balanced with modest hops. Feels a little thin, but it is is a clean finish.
Young brewery, giving fresh beer and measured, cautious innovations to a college town. Keep it up.
