After a littler over 13 years, I have finally reached my 500th official beer review here on BA. I didn't plan this at all, but it's fitting that it's a 13th Anniversary Beer. My review pace has slowed significantly recently, but when I taste a beer I'm inspired by, I try to get a review on here, and this one did just that. What a treat this one was!
APPEARANCE: Wow. This beer pours beautifully. A strong, eggshell white, one-finger head rests confidently on top of a gorgeous golden orange beer as dozens of streams of compact bubbles gently float to the surface. This beer almost appears to have swagger. Very few times in my 500 reviews have I been this impressed with what the beer looks like in a glass.
SMELL: The aroma is nice, but more subtle than I would have hoped given the rose hips, dandelion tea, and two serious yeast strains. It provides a precursor to tart, fruity, and mildly funky taste.
TASTE: Alright, we’re back on track here with the flavor. It just hits all the notes I want a Saison to hit - floral, subtly fruity, a faint hint of pepper, and a touch of tartness. It’s a complex blend of simple pleasures and I hope this anniversary edition is not the last time I get to try it.
MOUTHFEEL: Near perfection. Crispy, light-bodied, playful carbonation on the tongue. A mild sweetness that finishes on the semi-dry side makes your palate not only beg for that next sip, but to make it a big sip too. Hard to overstate how dialed in the feel of this beer is.
OVERALL: American craft beer left Saisons behind a half decade or so ago. I still can’t figure out why. This beer is an excellent argument for bringing them back. So, if you’re in Peace Tree’s distribution footprint and find this six pack, do not pass it up. If you’re not near them, find another six-pack or 4-pack of Saison to pick up and cast that occasional vote with your dollars for the brewers who are still committed to this classic and beautiful style of beer. I can’t promise what you get will be as good as this one, but I am certain it’ll still be delightful.
