American blonde ale with grapefruit.
For years now we've at times tinkered with our flagship beers. Mainly this has come in the form of various infusion keg one-offs for special events. But one that kept reappearing (and was hard to ignore) was our take on a fruited Lonely Blonde. More specifically, a grapefruited version. We're happy to report that after nearly an entire year of R&D to get the process oh-so-right to scale our fresh idea, we're introducing our very first brand extension of our #1 beer. Fermented on grapefruit puree and "dry-zested" with grapefruit zest, you'll find yourself wondering why we didn't do this earlier. Turns out, we do too.

12oz can. Poured out a crystal clear, light yellow color with a small, white head of foam. It left little to no lacing on the glass. It smelled of tart grapefruit, orange and some caramel. Sweet and tart grapefruit taste with caramel and a light bitterness.

If you like are the type that enjoys eating a fresh sour grapefruit, this may be the beer for you. The grapefruit overpowers everything else about it, so if you don’t love grapefruit, maybe take a pass and try something else.

12oz can
Looks bad/cheap with no head and tons of chunk. Tastes' pretty weak, even considering what we're talking about here. This is a lesser beer than their original blonde (which is just okay..) and has perfume sprayed innit
Really not much else there. And this is fresh stuff, too. Tastes too artificial and/or like rotten watermelon juice

Grapefruit Lonely Blonde pours a hazy copper color, with not much head. Big grapefruit aroma. Flavor is huge on the grapefruit, but still enjoyable and drinkable, with a nice creamy backbone. Good body and feel. Overall, this is a very nice grapefruit beer, refreshing, not overpowering, well built, nice subtle blond ale backbone.

Mildly hazed pale golden straw hued brew. Good amount of lacing sticks around. Pithy nose with some cracker-like graininess. Grapefruit flavor is mild, more rind on the palate than anything else. Base beer is plain but drinkable. Rind character adds bitterness though there is no zesty pop. Decent drinking.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 16 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 3/28/2019. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of juicy/lightly tart ruby red grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red apple, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of wood, peppercorn, pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of grapefruit, fruity yeast, moderate earthy hops, and pale/wheat malt notes; with good strength. Taste of juicy/lightly tart ruby red grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red apple, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of wood, peppercorn, pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and slight fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of lightly tart ruby red grapefruit, citrus peel/rind, lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, wood, peppercorn, pine, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of grapefruit, fruity yeast, moderate earthy hops, and pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent hop/fruit flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/grainy/sticky/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a delicious fruited American blonde ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of grapefruit, fruity yeast, moderate earthy hops, and pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/rindy/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Great balance of juicy/vibrant grapefruit, fruity yeast, earthy hops, and a clean pale/wheat malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example. Hoped for more grapefruit, but it was adequate, and the base style is well showcased instead.

Review No. 300--a regional favorite brewer.
Poured from a pint can into a tulip.
Pours a pleasant hazy apricot/gold with decent head and fair lacing.
The aromas are rather muted. Hints of noble hops, wheat, and citrus.
The classic American wheat and pale malt flavor is fine, but the promised grapefruit doesn't really arrive on the palate, at least not distinctly. This tastes pretty much like the base brew with only hints of vague fruitiness.
The brew is medium light, well-carbonated, and very drinkable, with a good tart, not quite crisp finish.
Overall a decent brew, but not remarkable, and lacking the promised grapefruit flavor.

What a disappointment. No grapefruit flavor anywhere in smell or taste. I would drink a Bud Light Orange instead of this 99/100. I guess I need to stop buying every grapefruit beer I see, none have yet to touch Grapefruit Sculpin as being worthy. Long Live Grapefruit Sculpin!
