Tallboy can from the LCBO; dated May 9 2016 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden hue, topped with one finger of soapy, sparkling white head which dissipates over the next couple of minutes, depositing a beautiful layer of lacing as it does so. A big, wide, foamy collar is left behind, rimming a patchy cap. Wet hay, leafy weeds and lemon peel on the nose, with light notes of doughy malt and caramelized sugar. Reminds me of their Crosswind PA so far, right up to and including that hint of mushy peas.
Pretty unremarkable. Grainy pale malts, light notes of doughy bread and honey sweetness, which quickly give way to hops on the back end. Weedy, leafy, dirty and extremely earthy, with hints of grass and spicy, herbal bitterness. There are hints of citrus, but the lemon zest is not a big factor. Light in body, with zippy carbonation and a crisp, relatively refreshing mouthfeel. I can see how this might be sessionable in principle, but I am not real big on the hop profile.
Final Grade: 3.47, a B-. Lake of Bays' Summer Sunset is a thoroughly average beer that falls somewhere between an English bitter and one of those 'Session IPAs' that seem to be all the rage these days. Unobjectionable, but mostly unsatisfying - and certainly not worth the $3.00 per can so I doubt I'll be returning any time soon. Tick if you must, but don't expect a particularly memorable beer - their 10 Point is a better buy if you're looking for something hoppy.
