Poured from a 473 ml tall boy can. It was average-to-bland and kind of disappointing. I detected very mild coffee or slight cocoa bitterness. Not as roasty as I'd like.

Nightwatcher Oatmeal Stout from Lake of Bays Brewing Company in Baysville, Ontario is 4.4%. 25 IBUs.

It’s dark brown in colour - almost Coca-Cola-like - and it has a thin beige head.

The smell is roasted maltiness. The taste is toasty malt and a hint of dark chocolate.

The beer is medium bodied and the mouthfeel is soft and smooth.

The finish is smooth and satisfying.

A nice dark colour, but not much head on it. I found the smell a bit lacking character, and the taste was good, but not great. I prefer something with a bit more bitterness, particularly in a stout. Overall not a bad beer, but not a great one, I have had better Oatmeal Stouts.

Okay, I have a few dislikes with this beer. It looks okay, but that is where the positive ends for this one. Smell is very metallic and borderline unpleasant. Taste is unexciting and the roasts overly bitter. No body to this, and the finish is non existent.

Nope nope nope. Not a good beer. Also, I bought this before knowing this company's politics... won't buy from them again.

473 can from LCBO. Ok stout, but I've have had better. Agree with other comments. A little light on abv (4.4%) for a stout. Weak aromas of toffee and cereal grains. Pours murky dark brown with a non lasting beige cap, little lacing. Drinkable, but not memorable.

Dark brown with a slight ruby tinge, moderate carbonation, filtered and topped with a finger of beige head.

Smells of cocoa dust and hints of coffee.

Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, black coffee, and toasted malty notes.

Light body, and moderate carbonation.

Drinking by the lake Dec 4th, 2017. Great flavour for such a sessionable stout.

Had on tap at Beertown Cambridge. Pretty decent oatmeal stout; smooth oatmeal moderately full mouthfeel, sweet bready & caramel malts with some chocolate hints. Nothing stands out about this but I seem to like almost all oatmeal stouts & would enjoy this again. Edit: Had a can more recently & didn't enjoy as much. Love the style so it still went down well but doesn't compare to a few other oatmeal stouts I've had. I did notice a pleasing vanilla hint in the aroma, but colour was a little lighter than I'd expect, mouthfeel not quite full enough, taste pleasing although also not quite full enough.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 18 2017, or at least, I think - black ink on a dark brown/black background might not have been the best choice here. Served near cellar temperature.

Pours a ruddy brown, brick-red sort of colour; deep in hue, but immaculately clear in complexion. A fat, foamy layer of pale beige-tinted head sits atop, nearly two fingers high at first, but recedes over the next few minutes down to a creamy cap and frothy collar. Decent lacing - it looks like you'd expect of an oatmeal stout, although the nose is a bit less, erm, on-the-nose. Rather muted aroma, with bready, toasted malts coming through as well as a clean grainy note. Suggestions of cream-laden coffee; the roasted barley comes off rather understated here.

A decent session stout, going down the hatch much like an English dark mild would. Toffee sweetness, roasted grain and bread crust flavours contribute about equally, with some sweet-ish oatmeal notes and milk chocolate also coming through. Hints of coffee on the back end, with a relatively neutral hop bitterness that I suppose I'd describe as slightly earthy. Not much of an aftertaste; just some quickly fading roastiness. The body is light and a bit creamy, with weak carbonation that barely agitates the palate - though they did get the silky-smooth texture of an oatmeal stout spot on. Not very compelling, but a true session stout nonetheless.

Final Grade: 3.77, squeaking out a B+. Lake of Bays' Nightwatcher is a serviceable light beer, and if that seems like a lukewarm compliment, that's because it kinda is. Let me be clear - I like this beer, but oatmeal stouts are one of my favourite styles, and this one doesn't really hold a candle to my favourites. Yet it's just so easy to toss back. So, while I would not call this a superlative beer, it's still a decent addition to the Lake of Bays portfolio that I'm sure I'll pick up once in a while.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. purchased from the LCBO for $3.25 CDN.

Appearance - Pours a dark ruby color, appearing dark brown in the glass. A nice two finger cap of light tan head will sit on top for afew minutes, slowly dissolving away until a creamy looking wispy head lingers.

Smell - Plenty of grain here, hints of chocolate and coffee throughout. A subtle caramel note in the background.

Taste - Not complicated, plenty of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Some creaminess and a touch of tobacco and leather combo. A touch thin on flavor, but pretty decent.

Mouthfeel- Smooth creamy, carbonation is middling and body is lighter than most in the style. Some prickly sensations on the tongue.

Overall - A respectable oatmeal stout that runs on the lighter side of things. Not quite the near meal in the glass that some of the Canadian craft oatmeal stouts end up being (St Ambroise), but certainly a serviceable sipper on Halloween night.
