473 mL can included in their Toasty Toes gift pack; packaged Sep 29 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-amber colour, generating an inch of fluffy, foamy white head that slowly recedes over the next five minutes or so. A beautiful curtain of webby lace clings to the glass, with a tight collar and thin, filmy cap eventually left over - looks like an IPA to me, and the aroma only further confirms that bias. I'm getting grapefruit and orange, with hints of lemon, stone fruit, lime zest and honeydew melon.
It's some sort of IPA, I have no real doubt of that - the malts are bready and doughy, with hints of wheat grain and caramel soon overtaken by hoppier flavours of white grapefruit and orange. Hints of passion fruit and berries, with earthy, pine-resiny, slightly spicy hop bitterness coming through at the finish and lingering beyond; faint suggestions of cocoa in the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that brushes against the palate, giving a little bit of a bite to this brew's otherwise smooth mouthfeel. Decent drinkability, and reasonably balanced - the hops win out overall, but the malt bill serves as a proper counterpoint.
Final Grade: 3.8, a B+. Lake of Bays has put out its fair share of IPAs and pale ales over the years, and I can at least say that Mystery Beer Two is above average in that cohort. I'm not totally sure what style of IPA this is, but 'dry hopped west coast IPA' comes to mind - it does have some nice fruity/juicy citrus qualities, but the bitterness is a touch too prominent for NEIPA to be a good fit IMO. Regardless of the details, it's the better of the two mystery beers, and so it has earned my vote.
