473 mL can from the LCBO, one of five beers included in their Toasty Toes pack from this past winter. Dated Sep 14 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a cloudy, translucent lemondrop yellow, topped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that recedes within two or three minutes' time. A thin collar and filmy cap remain, with several scattered swaths of lace tossed about as well - looks normal for a NEPA. Fruity aromas of pineapple, apricot, lemon-lime citrus, passion fruit and lychee, with hints of bubblegum and spicy hops.
Grainy, bready pilsner malts at the forefront, with lemon-lime citrus zest and stone fruit not far behind. Hints of spicy, grassy hops, pineapple and melon rind towards the finish, with fairly low bitterness; the aftertaste is pithy and spicy. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that remains spritzy and crisp right down to the last few swigs - quite refreshing, and highly sessionable.
Final Grade: 3.76, barely a B+. It's light, it's mellow, it's crushable - and if I'm being honest, I'd take Lake of Bays' New England Pale Ale over most of the other pale ales in their portfolio. No wheat or oats are listed as ingredients, just pilsner malts - a choice that is just fine with me. It actually drinks a lot like those self-styled 'Italian pilsners' that were all the rage last summer, albeit with a little more of a stone fruit presence. A good beer that might be worth bringing back as a seasonal.
