473 mL can from the LCBO, one of five included in their Toasty Toes mixed pack - which is mostly new beers this year, and also includes a pair of socks. Dated Sep 16 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours honey gold in colour, its body clouded up with countless flecks of sediment; situated atop is nearly two inches of soapy, bubbly white head that collapses within two or three minutes. A frothy collar and patchy cap live on, with multiple rings of messy lace deposited onto the glass - it's a nice lookin' glass, no doubt there. The aroma is wheaty, offering up hints of lemon, orange and melon rind, as well as suggestions of floral, mildly peppery hops.
The flavour profile is similar - wheaty, bready malt sweetness serves as the backdrop, with orange peel, grapefruit and lemon pithiness leading the way. The back end adds some spicy, floral, slightly earthy hop bitterness that lingers into peppery aftertaste with hints of stone fruit. Light-ish in body, with aggressive carbonation that prickles and prods the palate continuously throughout the sip, and remains lively well into the session. Crisp and refreshing, with solid drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.7, a B grade. Lake of Bays' White IPA is a serviceable effort, though I'll admit that white IPAs in general have never really clicked with me. The spiciness appeals to me, as do the West Coast IPA-esque flavours, so I'd say this one is mostly a success, but not a rousing one. If this comes out as a single at some point next year, I'd say give it a shot.
