473 mL can from the LCBO, one of two mystery beers included in their Toasty Toes mixed pack. Dated Sep 1 2022 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy orange amber colour, topped with less than an inch of frothy, off white-coloured head that seeps off within two or three minutes' time. A couple rings of sticky lace adhere to the glass, with a bubbly, sudsy collar and patchy cap floating upon the surface. I'm mostly getting pine and dank, herbal hops on the nose, though there's also a strong undercurrent of muddled citrus; caramelized sugars and lightly toasted grains can also be discerned.

Hope you like 'em bitter! Toasted grains, bready malt and caramel sweetness come through first, with piney, herbal hops soon joined by grapefruit pithiness. The back end is piney and super resiny, with a quick burst of indeterminate tropical fruit immediately overrun by the resiny, persistently bitter aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently prickles the palate, adding some crispness to its otherwise smooth, slightly slick mouthfeel. I found it easy to drink, but I guess it depends on your tolerance for high IBU fare.

Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. While the definitive style of Mystery Beer Two is still a secret, I have little to no doubt that it's some sort of IPA. Specifically, a single hop IPA: this is based on the back label, where they reveal that the hop used was NZH-101 (a relatively new kiwi strain that I know nothing about). I wasn't getting a lot of juicy/fruity characteristics, and its bitterness is robust, so I'd say this is way closer to an old school American West Coast IPA vs. a modern haze-bomb. Serviceably executed - not exactly a go-to beer, but if I had a hankering for something bitter (and this was sold as a single), I'd consider it.
