473 mL can from the LCBO, one of two mystery beers included in their Toasty Toes mixed pack. Dated Sep 13 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden-amber colour, briefly sporting an inch of soapy, frothy white head that settles off within two minutes or so. A sizable swath of messy lace is deposited onto the glass, with a thin collar and wispy film being the only other remnants. Mildly sweet aroma of grain and biscuit, with herbal, floral hops also coming through clearly.
A pretty decent borderline amber lager - there is some caramel and bready, biscuity sweetness, in addition to a grainy-sweet backbone that sets the tone for most of the sip. Floral hops come through on the back end, with a mildly earthy, noble hop bitterness tying things up; herbal/earthy aftertaste that lingers with hints of melanoidin malty sweetness. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some bite to this brew's smooth mouthfeel; very crushable.
Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. I struggled long and hard when deciding which style to submit Mystery Beer One as: it sure seems to be a lager, and the Saaz hops give it a decidedly Czech aroma and flavour profile IMO. I went with Czech pils, but Czech amber might be a better fit, with kölsch, German pils or Munich lager also being realistic choices. I appreciated this beer more than #2 (a very bitter pale ale), and so will probably vote #1... but at the end of the day, I don't have strong feelings for either one of them.
