473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 24 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale yellow colour, crowned with more than two fingers of fine, foamy white head that falls off within several minutes' time. A beautiful ring of sticky lace sticks to the glass, with a thin collar and cap remaining in place indefinitely - looks pretty good so far. Citrusy aroma of grapefruit, tangerine and orange peel, with added hints of apricot, passion fruit and piney hops.
It's a tasty little IPA: flavours of grapefruit, lemon and orange peel come through, along with hints of pineapple, apricot and passion fruit by mid-sip. Moderately bitter on the back end, with piney, resinous hops lasting through the finish and into a pithy aftertaste with hints of stone fruit. Medium-light in body, with average carbonation that adds some spritz to this brew's crisp, smooth mouthfeel. Very good drinkability - I could enjoy a couple of these in a row, especially on a warm spring evening.
Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. I'll wrap this review up by mentioning that I've only had a handful of cold IPAs, so I'm not really in a position to be saying whether Rapid Runner is a good one or a bad one... but I've had plenty of pale ales from Lake of Bays, and I do think RR is better than the bulk of them. About 80% IPA, 20% lager - not entirely unlike an IPL, though it definitely leans more toward the IPA side of the equation. I'll continue to buy this into the summer months, assuming they can keep fresh stock a-comin'.
