473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Apr 25 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy pale straw yellow colour, sporting one finger of tight, foamy white head that sizzles off within sixty seconds or so. A thick coat of lace clings to the glass afterwards, above a frothy collar and patchy, filmy cap - looks good so far. The aroma is exceedingly subtle, offering up suggestions of citrus, stone fruit and tropical fruit, with even fainter hints of grainy wheat.
The hops perform better in the flavour department, but they also peter out quickly, giving the impression of a watered-down IPA. Tangerine, pineapple and peach at the start, with lemon zest, grainy wheat, grapefruit pith and a spicy note rounding out the back end - moderately low bitterness, with a dry-ish aftertaste. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that mellows out over the course of the glass: almost too fizzy at first, but later on it adds a nice, rolling prickliness to the brew's thin mouthfeel. Easy to drink quickly, and surprisingly refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.46, a passable B-. I suppose you could make an argument that Unmapped is a New England IPA: it does contain oats/wheat, and it's not very bitter - but Lake of Bays has made use of the "NEIPA" descriptor in the past, and they chose not to here. Besides, there's no question that this is a session IPA first and foremost - a serviceable, low-calorie option that I wouldn't discourage others from trying. That being said, I don't think this is anything special amongst Ontario session ales, and I doubt I'll be buying it again.
