473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Lake of Bays' annual Toasty Toes mixed pack. Dated Sep 6 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours a deep, clear chestnut-bronze colour with ruby red highlights; situated atop is roughly one inch of smooth, foamy, beige-coloured head that lasts for two or three minutes' time. A creamy collar of dense suds sticks around afterwards, with a small smattering of lace scattered about the glass - looks fine so far. Very muted aroma that includes suggestions of roasted grains and ash, with very faint hints of coffee grounds, honey and pepper.
Not a lot going on - very mild, to the point of being plain and almost bland. Hints of burnt grain and roasted malts at the forefront, with suggestions of coffee and grains on the back end; mildly roasty aftertaste that doesn't persist. Light in body, with crisp & lively carbonation that adds a thirst-quenching quality; incredibly easy to toss back, and definitely not worth taking your time to savour - trust me, there's no hidden details to ferret out here.
Final Grade: 3.28, a high C+. I understand that this is only 3%, but Mystery Beer One tastes so watered down that it's barely even a step up from the non-alcoholic dark beers I've tried in the past. Below average from my perspective... but looking at it from a different angle, you could also say that it's exceptionally sessionable - plus, dark session beers are not all that commonplace, so there's at least a slight novelty factor here. It could be a (light) dark lager, or a dark mild ale - not that it makes a huge difference either way, because mystery beer #2 is the clear winner here.
