473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Dec 4 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear pale golden colour; some silty sediment clouds its complexion somewhat. Floating atop are two fingers of fluffy, soapy white head that gradually seeps off; a little over five minutes later, this layer has been reduced to a thin cap surrounded by a generous collar of froth. Nice lacing, too - it's a fine-looking light lager. Clean, neutral aroma of grainy malts and white bread, with a touch of doughy sweetness.
The flavours are along the same lines - grainy malts, a little bit of bready/doughy sweetness, and not a whole lot else. Maybe a faint flash of grassy hops on the back end, with emphasis on 'faint'. Weakly doughy aftertaste that quickly fades to dry. Light in body, with middling carbonation that adds a little bit of a bite to this lager's smooth, slightly thin mouthfeel. Effortlessly easy to toss back.
Final Grade: 3.51, a decent B grade. Homan Empire isn't a very interesting beer, but if you're looking for an ultra-light, low calorie lager then this is probably worth taking a flyer on. More flavourful than you'd expect for only 2.5%: in this respect, it's miles ahead of the macro equivalents such as Michelob Ultra or Molson Ultra. That does give it some potential utility, at least for people who are trying to cut back on their beer intake, but aren't willing to resort to non-alcoholic options. I don't see myself buying this again, but I do think it's a serviceable ultra-light lager.
