Birrificio Italiano “Polock”
€5,50 / 2/3 pinta al grifo @ Be Hoppy, Madrid, ES on 20/11/23
Notes via stream of consciousness: I was reminded by talking with the owner (?) at Be Hoppy that I’ve been to the brewery and spoken with the brewer in Italy. This beer hadn’t been created yet but it’s in the Grodziskie style and brewed with 90% smoked malts. It’s a clear golden beneath a short head of bright white foam. The smokiness appears to be from beechwood and is clear in the nose along with an otherwise basic maltiness - I’ll assume the remainder of the grain bill is Pilsner malt. The taste is delicate but with nuance, offering smokiness, a mild acidity, and a hint of grassiness. It’s moderately bitter and quite quaffable. In the mouth it’s medium-light in body and gently crisp. I’ve had Grodziskie before but not one with so much presence and life . Well worth trying.
