Just as when Tom Blake first affixed a Single Fin to the bottom of his surfboard in 1935, Hazy IPAs were once considered novel and even a bit dangerous. But the style has proven otherwise and shaped IPAs like few other innovations. Single Fin Hazy IPA is designed to take you down the face smoothly and in control—refreshment in a tropical, hammock-inducing way.

Grabbed this on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. This was the first time I saw this. Have to say that I wasn’t expecting much. I buy a lot of Mike Hess beers, but rarely do they make me go back for more. Their website called this, “Just as when Tom Blake first affixed a Single Fin to the bottom of his surfboard in 1935, Hazy IPAs were once considered novel and even a bit dangerous. But the style has proven otherwise and shaped IPAs like few other innovations. Single Fin Hazy IPA is designed to take you down the face smoothly and in control—refreshment in a tropical, hammock-inducing way.” No mention of the hops.

Poured a medium yellow-to-light gold murky color with 4-to-5 fingers of rocky white head. Pretty calm underneath the head with just a few bubbles coming up the sides of the glass. Perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. Perfect retention. Such a good-looking beer. (Sight - 5.00)

Smelled citrus-to-sweet fruit for the main flavors. Specifically orange citrus, tangerine, peach, pineapple, grapefruit and orange zest. A tad better out of the can. (Smell - 3.50)

Taste was not quite as good as the nose. Citrus, sweet fruit, orange, tangerine, peach, pineapple, bitter grapefruit peel and orange zest. The 6.5 pct. ABV is hidden. Almost tastes more like a pale ale or session IPA. (Taste - 3.25)

Light body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.50)

This was good overall, but nothing I would need to have again. (Overall - 3.50)

Another average at best hazy. Nose is OK, mostly papaya but some vinegar notes show as it warms. Taste is meh, and has some strange tart elements. Somewhat full mouthfeel. I really dont know how this is good enough to make it into packaged format. Will definitely not repeat, and may not finish my glass.

The fact that they had to state "great beer" on the can should have been a red flag. Its a tart, fruity, hazy IPA that is low on that good good hop flavor (it also has a weird ethanol after taste). Its very mediocre and doesn't stand out in any way.

I really like Hop Cloud, so I was happy to have another hazy IPA from Mike Hess. Unfortunately, this one is only barely drinkable. Hollow pineapple, old grapefruit, orange seeds. At some points, you almost think it's good? But it isn't. It calls to mind a champion prizefighter from long ago, coming out of retirement only to lose to a palooka. What the heck, Mike Hess?

Bought a 12 oz can from a room temp shelf at Trader Joe's to try for $1.84. Poured into a tall tulip glass. IMO this is a beautiful beer. very hazy but not like a glass of orange juice or smoothie. Beautiful head with 3 fingers (initially) of relatively persistent head and lots of lacing. Subtle nose, and I can't quite define what I smell. Some citrus, some tropical fruits. Flavor follows nose, very mildly carbonated mouthfeel. Overall a nice cost-effective offering, but perhaps not my favorite compared to their Hop Cloud hazy: Update....I tried this one again and was less enthused, especially by the taste. Just struck me as very indistinct and muted

Pours a dull swirl of golden orange. White head rises and falls. Decent retention. Light, scattered lacing.
Aroma is piney, a tinge of citrus, and a slightly Belgian yeast kinda funk.
Flavors are a bit confusing. That Belgian yeast note is omnipresent. The piney notes and citrus peeks in but it kind of goes all over the place.
Moderate carbonation and light to medium mouthfeel ends in a earthy bitter finish.
Overall, I don’t know. I won’t grab more cans. Maybe if I find it on tap I’d give it another shot.
