This new entry in the Warehosue Ales series has been available at the brewery for about a week. I picked up my growler earlier this evening. It's at fridge temperature. I've poured into a pint glass.

It is a dark copper beverage with a large tan head made up of medium and large bubbles. Soapy lacing is left behind. It is a clear liquid, and a lot of clinging carbonation could be seen in the glass. There isn't much rising carbonation.

The beer has a malty aroma. It has a sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar. Some spiciness can also be smelled, probably in part from the rye and in part form the mulling spices.

The beer has a really enjoyable flavor. It's what I expected a winter saison to taste like. It is malty, but does have a nice fruit component to it. I believe there is orange zest used in this brew. The other spices used are hard to identify, which is intentional. Rye is there and it adds a touch of pepper.

The beer falls on the heavy end of saisons and carbonation is good, considering this is a growler pour. It does a have a coat that you can feel, and it has good flavor retention.

I like this beer. I am enjoying it more that the previous Entrepôt beer. If you want to try an interesting take on the saison style or winter seasonals in general, you should seek this beer out.

This is a nice complex dark saison base, but the additional spice keeps this from going much above average for me. The mouthfeel on this beer is great, but there is an unpleasant mint and elderberry nose and taste, which distracts me from the other positive flavors.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours a dark, murky ruby brown with a huge off-tan head that recedes quickly. Leaves spotty lacing. Lots of carbonation and some yeasties appear to be floating around in there.

Aroma: Smells of chocolate, dark fruit, yeast, rye bread crust, and a little booze and funk.

Taste: Taste follows the nose, with some added spice kick. Chocolate competes with fruit for the dominant flavor.

Mouthfeel: Pretty sturdy, but very drinkable. Medium bodied.

Overall: Very nice, reasonably complex beer. I like a lot of Rising Tide's recent efforts and this is another good one.

 

 

 

Pours a brown color with a small tannish head, no lacing on the glass.

Smell has a decent malt backing with a strong rye spiciness that hits the nose fast and strong.

Taste starts with a roasted malt backing and kicks in with some rye complexity, star anise also rears its head and makes a strong presence, maybe slightly too strong.

Dark Rye Saison Brewed with Spices

A: Pours a dark ruby/mahogany color with 2 fingers of head that slowly fades down to a thin cap that lasts for a while

S: Fruit and spices up front, with some spicy rye malt and hints of dark chocolate and anise. Very interesting, but fits the season

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with spices and a light fruitiness and goes into some spicy rye malt and hints of anise. Lightly sweet, which balances the spices nicely. Finishes with lingering spice and rye

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Definitely a winter saison if I've ever seen one. The yeast and spices work very well with the rye malt and light sweetness. Very easy to drink and a "refreshing" winter brew. Definitely pick some up if you can find it
