i have come to expect the world from these guys, so its always awesome when a new beer comes around from them. seems like far too infrequently lately, at least in denver. this is a red wine barrel aged saison, but i suspect it had a pretty short ageing process. i get plenty of wood, but the red wine aspect which i was looking so forward to just really isnt there. hazy and pale in color, wheaty and rich in texture, aromatic like french saison yeast and nutty wood, but its missing the fruit and acidity of red wine, which really would have made this. the wood element is quite nice even without the wine flavor, it mellows the edges of the yeast, and brings a round smoothness to the whole thing, and doesnt hinder carbonation. i like the fullness of it, and how well the alcohol is hidden, this drinks really easy, but there is definitely something missing. if was in charge here, i would put this back in the barrel with a little brett for awhile and see what becomes of it, it just doesnt feel quite ready to me in some ways. i bet it will be better in the bottle if it gets that far.
