oops. Had notes from a rating of this beer on my phone and never transfer it.
Canned 04/07/23 consumed 01/28/24
A&S: pours think. Black beer with a chocolate foamy head. The aroma is dominated by vanilla.
T&M: Very sweet, but not with dark fruits, heavy with maple syrup vibes. Super thick and chewy.
Overall: not super impressed, above average, but wouldn't buy it again

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. A year and a half year old can stored in the fridge. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a thin dark khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dates, raisins, maple syrup and vanilla. Flavor is semi-sweet caramel malt, maple syrup, vanilla, raisins, vanilla and banana. Sweet maple syrup and vanilla finish. Medium bodied with moderate to heavy creaminess; thick mouth feel. This starts like a somewhat sweet English barleywine, then the added maple and vanilla flavors kick in; it gets sweeter through the taste into the finish. There is an interesting banana note that must be an interaction between the other flavors. Quite busy, but tastes very good, nice balance between the flavors and support from the barelywine base. A little too sweet, almost cloying as if there was still maple syrup in the mix. I expect the best from Evil Twin and this is a flavorful and well brewed dessert barleywine. I think I'm moving away from sweet dessert beers these days, though.

16 ounce can, canned 04/07/22, thanks to Brutaltruth for this brew! Served in a Teku, the beer pours a murky dark brown color with about an inch and a half tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, maple, and some bready malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some earthy and herbal flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit slick and syrupy with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this barleywine but it didn't really impress me either. But with that being said it's worth a try if you get the chance!

A - Pours a dark reddish brown with a one finger tan head. The head fades fast leaving some light clingy lacing.
S - Aroma is plums, figs, dark cherries and maple.
T - The taste is raisins, dark cherries, dates, toffee, maple and a light hop bitterness in the finish.
M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Slick mouthfeel with an oily finish.
O - This is a really solid Barleywine. On the sweeter side, but still super drinkable.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter. Part of our "Happy Valensbeers" for Valentines Day.
This malt bomb pours a dark muddled brown with a moderate had of kahki foam that
settles to a thin ring, thin dusty layer, and sports some light lacing. Nose of maple, vanilla,
cola, cherry, and spicy hops drenched in caramel. Flavors lightly expand on the nose with
faint dates, dried cherry, maple, vanilla, heavy caramel, subtle spicy hops, hint of leather.
Mouth feel is slick, coating, syrupy, light carbonation, lightly warming, and finishing
sweet verging on cloying with a hop note on the rear.
Warmth helps, but too much warmth gives this one even heavier sweetness.
Good, but not the normal Evil Twin quality I usually get.
Cheers

Less than the sum of its parts unfortunately, for me. Evil Twin have proven they know what’s what with the barleywines over the years - lll never forget those Torst bottles, for one example - but this is just stomped on with maple and some residual vanilla still lingering at the end of January 2023. Overly sweet and any nuanced notes of malt, raisin, prune sherry etc are mostly buried. There is a hint of hoppy bitterness in the finish. It tastes nice enough but it’s very sweet and it’s not really immediately identifiable as a barley wine now, is it? Endangered species it seems.
Edit: I had a hard time finishing this one. With a good barley wine I can’t get enough, this was just way too sweet, too flabby.

More vanilla presence than maple, but definitely has both those flavors in abundance. Nothing too sweet or cloying. Slightly thick, just a hint of oiliness. Just wish the Barleywine aspect asserted itself a bit more.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a bit of head. Tons of bubbles rising along the sides of the glass. The nose is as advertised - maple and vanilla come through pretty quickly. Some nice toffee comes through as well. Dark fruit follows - plums, blueberries, and some jolly rancher candy.
The taste is really nice. Cola, vanilla, maple, toffee, grapes, cherries, blueberries, and sweet candy. Definitely a bit on the sweet side, but very drinkable. Overall, a nice barleywine.

Sweeter than I prefer, the maple and vanilla dominate. There is some caramel, toffee, and just a hint of raisin in the background at least. Not bad overall.

This is a tasty, strong beer but the emphasis on molasses and vanilla tend to negate the aspects that Barleywine lovers look forward to!!! I could have done with less of both, but especially the vanilla. Poured from a 16 oz.can into a pint glass, this beer is a beautiful dense brown color with some golden and reddish highlights coming through. The best feature is the big khaki head and the lacing!!! A beer of this strength usually comes with little or no head and no lacing. This beer produced a big, long lasting head and plenty of lacing. Taste and smell were robust but the toffee and maltiness (especially my expectation of caramel malt) were buried under molasses sweetness and vanilla. This beer was not too sweet, just masking stuff that I would have liked better!! Mouthfeel was rich and fairly smooth, some alcohol presence but not a real "burn" and a little bitterness to offset the molasses. The vanilla was a bit overdone, kind of like a Bourbon Barrel beer where every other aspect suffers at the hands of the bourbon. That being said, I liked it well enough and would drink one again with somewhat different expectations!!!

I don't know if I would call this a Barleywine. Not really that close to the style. Way too sweet. Get you insulin out for this one. This brewery really need to get a lesson in what a Barleywine is.
