Our 2020 ART SERIES feature photography submitted by our Instagram fans. The first winner of our contest is Derek Delacroix, a San Diego-based photographer who shoots black and white palm trees to support environmentalism. Delacroix’s Instagram handle (@tropicaldarkroom). was the inspiration for the beer’s name — Tropical Darkroom Sour IPA.
Tropical Darkroom is a kettle sour IPA brewed and dry-hopped with fruit-forward Sabro and Mosaic, for a bright, tropical hop profile. The brewers then and fresh kiwi purée to counterbalance the clean sour notes of the beer, for a refreshing tart and bitter with lingering kiwi sweetness.
Tropical Darkroom is the first in a series of three beers in the 2020 Art Series. We’re proud to be supporting emerging artists whose roots perfectly align with our stay coastal lifestyle.

Had Rachel pick this for me on a recent Coronvirus trip to Trader Joe’s. Not generally a fan of Coronado beers save for Weekend Vibes and a few others, but was interested in this one. Coronado website description read, “Tropical Darkroom is a kettle sour IPA brewed and dry-hopped with fruit-forward Sabro and Mosaic, for a bright, tropical hop profile. The brewers then and fresh kiwi purée to counterbalance the clean sour notes of the beer, for a refreshing tart and bitter with lingering kiwi sweetness.” That’s my favorite hop (Mosaic) and one that is on its way to No. 2 (Sabro). Was looking forward to it.
Poured a light amber clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of off-white fizzy head. Good deal of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass at different speeds. Very good watery lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled Sabro, tangerine, stone fruit, coconut, kiwi, pear, tart, floral, Mosaic, Juicy Fruit and grass. Even better out of the can with Sabro, tangerine, stone fruit, peach, coconut and Mosaic coming through. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted a little better than the nose. Got Sabro right away with big tangerine, followed by stone fruit, peach, kiwi, pineapple, pear, coconut, tart, floral, Mosaic, Juicy Fruit and grass. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, tart finish. (Feel - 3.75)
I think I underrated this slightly, but very good at least. And this is a lot coming from a style (sour IPA) I don’t particularly care for. (Overall - 3.75)

It’s a little light.... the hops, sourness and tartness. Not a bad beer, in my opinion.... it’s a good introductory to sour beers.

It’s labelled as a tropical sour IPA with Kiwi. Taste a lot like a cider. Reminds me of a soda with a bit of vodka in it. Not really getting the hops so feeling a little disappointed in that. Slightly sweet slightly sour.
