Glass: Fuller’s London Pride shaker pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Price: $1.42
Purchased: May 26, 2016

Misc.: No BOD on can; Reviewed as an American Amber / Red Ale (sorry Untappd AND RateBeer)

Picked this one up on a whim at Trader Joe’s in Santa Barbara. Didn’t read the back of the can until I was ready to review it and wow it looks like it’s going to be a good one - … full-bodied double red ale with aromas of apricot, peach and mango that meld with notes of caramel toast. I am all in.

Poured a reddish, copper, amber color with 2-to-3 fingers of off-white, frothy head. A few bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Very good amount of uneven, foamy, spiderweb lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled a mix of fruits and malts, getting passion fruit, mango, juicy apricot and peach mixed with a caramel malt backbone, toasted toffee and toasted grain. Also some Juicy Fruit gum, earthy rye, sweetened iced tea and some boozy fruit punch. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted not quite as good as the nose, getting mango, some passion fruit, peach, iced tea, lemon zest, sugary dark fruit punch, earthy rye and toasted caramel. Malt rules the day here. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Rather smooth finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Really enjoyed this one. A few of my categories could have gone either way, but I would have this again. (Overall - 4.00)

Crisp caramel malt and a toasty edge matched by subtle peach and grapefruit. It's a nice beer, but pales to the hoppier red ales, especially since I'm not getting an especially complex malt character. I like the spicy finish, but the aroma hops need to be amped up.

On tap at the Surf 'N' Suds Beer Festival held at Carpenteria State Beach in Carpenteria, CA.

Pours a hazy orange-red with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, rye, earth, pine needle, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with rye, pine needle, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and rye bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice mix of rye, pine, and citrus characteristics all around.

Serving type: on tap.
