For this year’s special brew, our team created a small-batch, barrel-aged treat inspired by Mexican chocolate. The base of this creation is an imperial stout aged in both bourbon and Tequila barrels, then carefully treated with cacao, vanilla, cinnamon, ancho and guajillo peppers. Rich, roasty notes blend seamlessly with chocolate and smoky characteristics, while barrel-aging and the addition of vanilla add a touch of sweetness to this flavor fiesta.

Generally not a fan of Figueroa Mountain’s beers, but I’m a sucker for their anniversary beers. Saw this was on tap and started my Christmas Eve off with this one. Untappd called this one a, “Barrel-aged imperial stout with flavors inspired by mexican chocolate. This stout was aged in both bourbon and tequila barrels, then treated with cacao, vanilla, cinnamon, ancho and guajillo peppers for added depth. Rich, roasted notes seamlessly blend with developed chocolate and smoky characteristics while vanilla and barrel-aging help pump up the sweetness in this flavor fiesta.”

Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki tan frothy head when I got it. Could see a few bubbles creeping along the sides of the glass. World-class spiderweb lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled cacao, Mexican chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut, cinnamon, milk chocolate syrup, cocoa and oak. Wasn’t specifically getting any bourbon or tequila. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste was not as good as the nose, but had more spice. In order got caramel, cacao, Mexican chocolate, cinnamon, lingering peppery spice, oaky Tequila barrel, cocoa, milk chocolate syrup, vanilla, a touch of coconut and nutmeg. Wasn’t getting much bourbon barrel. Pretty smooth for 11.5 pct. ABV. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.50)

Not toward the top of one of my favorite styles - BBA Mexican chocolate - but still outstanding. (Overall - 4.00)
