For our 10th anniversary we wanted to honor the man who helped start this Fig Fam, Jim Dietenhofer. This bourbon barrel-aged strong ale has its recipe routed in two of Jim’s favorite beers, Davy Brown and Stagecoach Stout. This blend of flavors will bring out notes of vanilla, oak, burnt toffee and cherry. Let’s all raise a glass for the entire “FigFam.”

Grabbed Fig Mountain’s 10th and 11th anniversary bottles after finishing up a flight with a review of the 12th anniversary. I’ve generally liked the Fig Mountain anniversary beers, giving the fourth a 3.95 on May, 2015; the sixth a 4.29 on Dec. 23, 2016; the ninth a 4.13 on Dec. 24, 2019 and the 12th a 4.21 on Jan. 3, 2023. Back of the bottle description was “For our 10th anniversary we wanted to honor the man who helped start this Fig Fam, Jim Dietenhofer. Poured a very dark, almost black color with two fingers of khaki white head. Could see just a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class spotty lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.50)
Initially wasn’t that into the smell. Kind of a lot going on but didn’t quite work out. Got toasted oak, toffee, caramel, dark fruit, black cherry, plum, vanilla, toasted brown sugar and hints of char wood. Got better as it went down. Not as good from the bottle with the addition of raisin and date. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted much better than the nose. Wow. This was complex. In order got toffee, caramel, toasted coconut, oak, vanilla, toasted brown sugar, black cherry, dark fruit, plum, date and fig. (Taste - 4.25)
Full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.50)
Damn. This changed from the nose to the taste pretty quickly. I love this style (American Strong Ale) and would like to see more out there. (Overall - 4.25)
